Full Version: Ad-awate Se Or 2007 For Windows 98 Se

I used to have Ad-Aware SE which runs on Windows 98 SE. When I saw Ad-Aware 2007, I unistalled Ad-Aware SE and try to install Ad-Aware 2007 but to my dismay, it said I need Window 2000 (or higher?). Questions: 1) Is there a Ad-Aware 2007 for Window 98 SE? 2) if not, is there an Ad-Aware SE outthere that works with Windows 98 SE? If the answer is no for both questions, though I unistalled the Ad-Aware SE, is it hidden somewhere in my PC that I can still re-install it? If the answer is still "no", what's the next best thing out there that can detect and remove ads?

thanks,

Hi noad.
Ad-Aware 2007 is not compatable with Windows 98.
SpySentinel
If you are still going to use Windows 98, Keep using Ad-Aware SE 1.06r

But where can I download Ad-Aware SE 1.06r? I unistalled mine and don't have it any more. Is SpyBot any good? Is it worth the $?

Spybot Search & Destroy is free. Did you have Ad-Aware SE plus or pro, or the free version.

I still have 1.06r1 on both my PC`s (one XP and the older 98SE) The XP still updates OK but the 98SE machine now constantly gives an "Error retrieving update" message when trying to update AdAware. Does this mean that all support for 98SE has now been withdrawn? I`m reluctant to upgrade the later PC, as I`ve read some slightly unfavourable reviews about AdAware 2007.

my win 98se machine still takes the adaware se updates with no problems; it will NOT take the adaware 2007 version as it is not compatible wink.gif

Hi davolente,

The Defs should still be downloading for W98SE - try the steps as set out in this FAQ: I Cannot Perform Web Update Of The Definition File After Upgrading To Build 1.06 (error Retrieving Update)

QUOTE
The definition file on your system might be corrupted. To check, locate the (default) directory C:\program files\lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE\ folder. Delete the files: defs.ref and def.ref.old and try again

If the update halts after only five percent of it is processed, your firewall is most likely preventing the update. To correct, disable the firewall for the duration of the update or configure the firewall to allow requests from Ad-Aware to pass through.

Web update confirmation dialogs are suppressed. To correct:

Open Ad-Aware.
Click on the Ad-Aware Configuration Window (the gear) icon.
Click on Tweak.
Click on WebUpdate Settings to expand it.
Deselect Suppress WebUpdate confirmation dialogs.

You have inadvertently turned on the Use HTTP Proxy option. To correct:

Open Ad-Aware.
Click on the Integrated WebUpdate Tool (small i) icon.
Click on Configure.
Deselect the Use HTTP Proxy option.
Try updating the definition file again.

If none of the above is preventing the update, it is recommended that you try to perform a manual update.
Do as follows: Close Ad-Aware.

Download the latest definition file in ZIP format and save the file to a temporary location.

Unzip the contents of the file either with your favorite ZIP utility or the built-in support in Windows to the Ad-Aware installation directory (default path is C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-aware SE\).
Open Ad-aware.
Confirm that the latest definition file is installed by checking out the Initialization Status in the main program window.

To download the latest Def File (SE1R178 29.06.2007), go to the LS website here and click on the "Download Current Definition File "link:

On the next page, select the right-hand button for Ad-Aware SE 1.06r1 (the left is for AAW 2007).

Unzip and install as above.

Spike
