Hello,

I notice from the log that there are running more than one different Anti-Virus programs with Auto-protect enabled. McAfee (Network associates) and Symantec/Norton.
Never install more than one Antivirus and Firewall! Rather than giving you extra protection, it will decrease the reliability of it seriously!
The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Also because more than one Antivirus and Firewall installed are not compatible with eachother, it can cause system performance problems and a serious system slowdown.

So you have to make a decision here and keep the Antivirus you prefer and uninstall the other one.
Then reboot after uninstalling.


I also see you have Viewpoint installed...
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

• Viewpoint
• Viewpoint Manager
• Viewpoint Media Player

Then, * Download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished and after reboot (in case it asks to reboot), it should open a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.

I installed Norton 360 as a trial kind of thing, hoping maybe if this was a virus it would catch it. McAfee came on my computer when I bought it so that is the one I want to keep. However, when i go to uninstall Norton my computer just kinda freezes up and it wont let me uninstall it. Any tips in that department?

Also, I looked to uninstall those Viewpoint programs but nothing comes up in my Add/Remove Programs box. They are obviously still on here, I just dont know how to get rid of them.

Is there any reason why you didn't perform my other steps except for the combofix?
It is with a reason I asked you to uninstall one Antivirus - unless it's no problem for you that your system runs really slow and BSODs may appear because of the incompatibility of two Antivirus running.
Since you installed the trial from Norton, I suggest you uninstall it since it won't protect you anyway after the trial has been expired.

Also, I see Viewpoint still present as well.
So please perform above steps first and then reboot.

After reboot,

* Go to start > control panel > Display properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop... > Web tab
Select everything you find in there (except for "My current home page") and press the delete button on the right.
Hit ok below > apply in previous window.

Then, delete next folders:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\TQ0
C:\WINDOWS\system32\T8
C:\WINDOWS\system32\T6QaSQ
C:\WINDOWS\system32\T6
C:\WINDOWS\system32\T4
C:\WINDOWS\system32\T3

C:\Temp <== this folder is no default temp folder in XP, and in your case, it was created the same time as malware was created.

Then, Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)


Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this:
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.

As stated in my previous post, I tried to uninstall Norton but when I go to the Add/Remove Programs box, all my computer does is freeze up. I dont know another way to remove this from my computer. Its not that I ignored the task at hand, I tried. I just couldnt seem to get rid of it. Thats why I asked if you had any other suggestions as to how to get rid of it.

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Open HiJackThis
Click on the "Config..." button on the bottom right
Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
Click on the Box that says "Uninstall Manager"
Select all instances of Viewpoint there, but don't delete it, but look in the Uninstall command box and copy and paste the uninstall command here.

Do the same for Norton/symantec and post what's present in the uninstall command in your next reply.

Aha, I see you already managed to uninstall them

Just one leftover in HijackThis concerning Viewpoint, but that may be because you didn't reboot yet.

O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe (file missing)

So reboot and look if above entry is gone.
If not, don't fix it in HijackThis, because HijackThis won't be able to fix this one. Also, Hijackthis doesn't delete the service, but disables it instead.
So to delete the leftover from the registry, go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

sc delete "Viewpoint Manager Service" Hit enter.

Then you'll see that above entry should be gone.

The rest of your log looks clean again. How are things now? popups ect gone?

Things are working great! The popups are completely gone! I also noticed my computer boots up a lot faster. Thanks for all your help!!
