Full Version: Updates Fail Since March - Not The 5% Thing? Uninstall/reinstall Didn't Help

This topic is for update problems not related to the 5% one nor resolved by the topic AUTO UPDATE SERVER DOWN.

Please include your OS (such as WIN XP PRO), and security software, etc., when you explain the steps you go through to launch Ad-Aware, do update, and the message(s) that the update stops with. Thanks.
PLEASE DO NOT POST IN THIS TOPIC IF YOURS NOW WORKS, UNLESS YOU KNOW ANOTHER ANSWER BESIDES THE ONE MENTIONED BELOW (or something else you tried solved your update problem) - Or if you can fix this, of course.

I am not with Lavasoft. There was a problem starting around March 23, 2007 where because of dead DNS entries, many Earthlink, OpenDNS, and others could not get any updates (5% complete message) until a corrected version of Ad-Aware was put out around the first week of April with a new (corrected) server location (name).
Note thet the release numbers did not change. I had to uninstall and reinstall using the reviseed software to get around the problem, and it worked for me, and many others, but there are still some (or many) with problems.
I used the exact link below, to download the copy I installed. Note that this is only the free version, and if you have a paid, plus, etc., then I believe there are revised versions on the website.
http://download.lavasoft.com/personal/aawsepersonal.exe

So, I HAVE CREATED THIS TOPIC FOR PEOPLE THAT HAVE DONE THE UNINSTALL/REINSTALL WITH THE REVISED SOFTWARE, AND ARE STILL HAVING A PROBLEM GETTING THE UPDATES.

PLEASE DO NOT POST IN THIS TOPIC IF YOURS NOW WORKS, UNLESS YOU KNOW ANOTHER ANSWER BESIDES THE ONE ABOVE.

THE OTHER TOPIC HAS GROWN TO 10 PAGES, AND COUNTING, AND MOST ENTRIES RELATE TO PEOPLE THAT ARE NOW RESOLVED. This new topic is so the ones with some other condition can explain, and hopefully Lavasoft will help them.

If you want to read the other topic, it is something about AUTO UPDATE SERVER DOWN.
I do hope that everybody can have their problem resolved, and thanks from them for your help keeping this topic related to their on-going problem.
Note that we have all spent many hours each on the other topic, which is why this new topic should help the ones that still have an issue with updates focus on their on-going problem.
Mike Hull
My OS is XP Pro, running Ad Aware SE Personal build 1.06r1, my anti virus program is Avast version 4.7 Home Edition.

This problem started for me about March 21st. No matter what "fixes" I tried on here, nothing has worked. I get the error message when trying to update Ad Aware.
It says, "Error connecting to server. Please retry updating at another time". It does not lock at 5%, it doesn't even go there, the message comes up before it's even connected to the update server.
None of the foolish DNS changes or deleting registry values, def files, countless uninstalls and reinstallations of Ad Aware has helped one bit.

This problem is not mine alone, there were many others that posted in this thread along with me:
http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?s...8059&st=180

I guess they were overlooked.

I wrote a friend in the midlands of England and she said that not only is her Ad Aware acting just like this(same version as mine), but everyone she knows has the same problem, as does everyone they know also.
I have to reestimate my numbers. For everyone that posts about this, there are countless thousands that have it but do not report it. Better face it, this it getting global, and it's not our computers. I've scanned mine on any available scanning engine and it's clean. Always has been.

Some type of permanent fix would be nice. Thank you.

It just dawned on me that you have just released a BETA version of one of your products.
I've never seen a BETA anything that didn't cause way more trouble than it was worth, and not only in it's own program, but anything it might be remotely connected to.

Could that possibly be the source of these continuing problems all over the world?

That's why it's called "Beta" because it's in the testing phase. I have the Plus version of Ad-Aware and ever since I reinstalled it when the fix was released, I haven't had any problems yet.
lav101
Thanks for help, but if recent uninstall/reinstall corrected your problem, please do not post unless you know of some other condition, since everybody in this topic is supposed to have done that more than once already.

The beta question is whether the beta availability is causing problems with the older releases being able to get to the updates.
He has already used the link in the other topic, and the one listed in the beginning of this topic to reinstall many times:
http://download.lavasoft.com/personal/aawsepersonal.exe

We are waiting for Lavasoft to respond (I am not with Lavasoft), or somebody else that can throw in some expert advise other than just uninstall/reinstall. Thanks again.

Also, if UNINSTALL/REINSTALL HAS NOT corrected your problem, anybody please feel free to post in this topic about any related update problem you are still having.

I'm not sure if I am following you, but how could a beta being available effect the function of Ad-Aware SE for users who have not used the Ad-Aware 2007 beta?
lav101
The beta thing was just a shot in the dark. Never mind that.
Anybody still have update problems that are nnot the 5% thing?
Post them in this topic, please.

I had a computer melt down about the10th of this month from all the messing about concerning this. The hard drive was toast.
I never installed AdAware after getting a new(used) hard drive installed till today. But when I did, the updates work.
I don't know what was causing the problem, but something in the prior hard drive was. Wished I knew.

Thanks for all the help lav101.

Mike

I am not with Lavasoft, but...
Are you using the link that they supplied if you are using the free version? (see previous posts)
Did you un-install, and boot before doing the new install?
What Windows are you running - XP HOME, MEDIA CENTER, or PRO?

You're welcome, Mike. I had seen your previous updates, but decided not to ask how it was going in the
middle of your disaster. I use CMSPRODUCTS.COM ABS to replicate my hard drive and put it the bank safe box
so I can hopefully go back to a known point in time. The drives (I have 2) can be physically swapped out from
the external USB box back to my notebook if I have to. It cost some money (check dell.com and pricegrabber.com
to get them cheaper), but I have an idea how bad the crash hurt you, 'cause it makes me sick when something like
your crash happens, but sometimes things turn out better. You can also burn your mail, etc., using Nero, but it is
a little complicated, and be sure to do file/refresh compilation to pick up nnew folders, etc. (pricegrabber.com Nero)

So sorry, it happened, but maybe you had some virus or registry problem. I debated over Home and PRO,
and I was afraid that PRO might have some situation with general home software that it would take an IT guy
to fix or that a company like Lavasoft would not be aware of quickly, and maybe something did happen related
to PRO - who knows?. Thanks for letting us know that Ad-Aware is now working for you.
Somebody said they were going to Spybot, but I much prefer to run both manually at least once per week.
I do not let them repair anything automatically, though.

Sorry about how we started out, but now look. Funny how things can work out. The other guy I ticked off probably
will never know how it turned out. Also I was a newbie, and now I put my sweat equity into the board. I had
used Ad-Aware for years, but never helped out on this board. Guess I have now. Best wishes, Jerry.

Thanks again, Jerry! The computer was working fine one minute and all of a sudden it said some files were bad, and had to scan. It started to find all kinds of bad files, then it started running wild, too fast for me to see what it was doing, so I shut it down. When I went to restart, I got the seldom seen Dell screen. Leaving that on for about a minute would elicit a change to the black Windows XP Pro screen, and then it would switch back to the Dell in about the same amount of time. Just back and forth.

A so called computer tech installed a used 14GB hard drive, smaller than the original one of 20GB. It makes a noise like someone using a push lawnmower ohmy.gif , so I don't imagine it's long for this world. I got a new 60GB hard drive from Dell as I lost the favorites URL that had the place with the good prices on hard drives and memory chips tailored fro your computer model.

The first "tech"left my old hard drive hooked up as drive "F", and before it completely quit, I was able to salvage the favorites and My Documents off of it(then unplugged it as it was dragging down the system).

I had them on disk already, but they were not really up to date. Now all I have to do is figure out how to get favorites from the new disk copy to my favorites in OE(documents are already loaded. It starts to download favorites and stops soon, saying an error occurred. It seems to be one particular favorite URL. It says it's already in use and can't be deleted, or anything else. I wonder if that was because I had Mozilla open at the same time and it has the same favorites URL too?

Maybe the guy coming over to swap out the old hard drives and copy the programs to the new one can manage it. He's Microsoft trained, unlike most computer people in this valley who do it as a hobby, but ask $100.00 an hour. rolleyes.gif

I hope everyone else is able to resolve their problems in a less costly manner than I did, by accident. wink.gif ohmy.gif

Have been plagued with the "error receiving update" message for several weeks now. Have downloaded from CNet and other sites and have tried the un-install/re-install several times. Tonight I downloaded from the link u have posted here and the un-install/re-install worked. Conclusion is that other download sites are offering a corrupted program.

Have you uninstalled/restarted/and using downloaded and saved to desktop of the corrected copy from below, installed?
Do not just let the new install do the unninstall - do uninstall and then restart the machine just in case.
This is the Ad-Aware SE Personal (free one) corrected for the old internet access address (old DNS) entries.
download.com and other sites might not have been updated yet. The correction in this copy is from early April.

I have done everything you have said and I still can't run adaware se. It freezes just when it starts. I have windows XP professional. I bought and ran Stop sign and it found a trojan but says it deleted it. I redid the uninstall and reinstall and still doesn't work.

What's next?

It seems like XP PRO might be an issue. You did't take those DNS changes that were being passed
around as a bypass for this problem a couple of weeks ago, did you?
I don't know XP PRO, but I am wondering if people are installing under the wrong user (not Admin)
or something like that. Guess you should check with somebody you know that knows XP PRO.
I decided not to use it for fear of problems like this. Support people might ot know PRO, etc.,
unless you are at a company. I suggest you open a new topic that says (as you said), since
you do not seem to be having the update problem (which is all I have bee addressing - I am
not with Lavasoft)...

Folks, the topic you need to refer to is here:

Solution For " Error Retrieving Updates. Interrupts At 5% Download Completion "
http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showtopic=8253

Freezing of Ad-Aware when it starts could be a sign of an existing infection.
This does not appear to be an issue with the updates.

I'm going to close this topic now. Please refer to the above referenced topic for issues regarding updates problems.
