I have been using Ad-Aware (free edition) for many years and have installed it on all my friends computers as well. I have now been advised by someone who lives across the country from me that when he installed Ad-Aware and ran it, it told him "It is free for the first 20 spywares" but he had 650 or so and now they want to charge for the rest - I have never heard of such a thing with LavaSoft Ad-Aware - is this true ????

No truth in that at all !!!
Make sure that he is downloading the genuine program from here - there may be some rogue sites that list similarly-named products, which then try to scam people into purchasing (not unusual, unfortunately).
Lavasoft has clearly stated that the free version will continue to be available when Ad-Aware 2007 is released from Public Beta Testing
