Full Version: Mystery Trojan/Virus? Help!
Lavasoft Support Forums > Archived Topics > Archives: Resolved/Inactive Topics > Resolved/Inactive General Support Issues
Maverick
Greetings,

I have recently been infected (I think) with a very mysterious trojan or virus. A couple of days ago, I was surfing the internet when my computer mysteriously shut itself off. After I re-started it, everything looked fine except that both Internet Explorer and Outlook Express are stalling whenever I try to browse the web or check my e-mail. For example, when I open up IE, half a webpage may load but then it'll get "stuck". Something similar is happening with OE.

I spoke to the technical support people of my ISP, and they confirmed that nothing is wrong with my computer, modem, or connection, and they suspected that I might be infected with some virus or trojan.

So I ran Ad-Aware and it came up with nothing. However, I detected a virus with my AVG anti-virus scanner called "Java Byte/Verify". I got rid of this with AVG, and a subsequent scan revealed everything was clean. Just now, I scanned again with AVG and Ad-Aware but nothing has shown up. I think I'm infected with some mysterious trojan or virus, but don't know what it is (nothing is picking it up).

Unfortunately, I cannot use my (infected?) (desktop) computer now, and hence I'm sending this message from a laptop. I hope somebody can help me out (believe me, the help will be deeply appreciated - I am on the verge of insanity trying to figure out what's wrong with my computer!).

If they're of any help, I am pasting the the log-file of my most recent Ad-Aware scan below, along with another log obtained from Hijack This. Thanks in advance!!

GRAFX
Maverick,
Please can you try at least two if not more of these On-line scans
Panda
Symantec
McAfee
TrendMicro
Bit Defender
Kaspersky
CommandonDemand
Computer Associates
CyberTechHelp
PC Pitstop
Stinger
Also please use one or both of these Trojan scanners
a2
or download and try
TrojanHunter (Note Trojan Scanner 30 day Trial)

Then once you have done clear out your cache folder again ie: Run
CCleaner
(Note in CCleaner: go to >options > advanced > Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"). but see CCleaner Set up use the WebUpDate
to get the latest Definition file
SE1R110 31.05.2006 then rescan with Ad-aware doing a "Full Scan" and post your logfile here by using the "Add-reply".

GRAFX
Maverick
Hi GRAFX,

Thanks for your prompt reply. Unfortunately, I couldn't run an on-line scan on my (infected?) desktop computer. The trouble is that both Internet Explorer and Outlook Express "freeze" whenever I try to browse the web or check my e-mail. I'm currently accessing the web from my laptop.

I did, however, download Trojan Hunter, copied it to my desktop PC and ran it there. Interestingly, it picked up some problems with my desktop. There were two entries in the registry which were picked up as "suspicious", and the program also found some files infected with a trojan. Unfortunately, Trojan Hunter doesn't seem to have an option for me to save a log file, otherwise I would have posted here.

Anyway, after running Trojan Hunter (and having it fix the problems it found), I ran CCleaner and Ad-Aware (with the latest definition file as you suggested). Afterwards, I tried to browse the web and check my e-mail (on the infected computer), but my original problem is still persisting unfortunately. Thanks again for helping me out here.

LS CalamityJane
Your HijackThis is an outdated obsolete verision, but it is showing an infection of SecurityiGuard and a homepage hijacker trojan.

For now, since you can't operate properly, we'll make these fixes and then I'm going to need a fresh HijackThis log with the correct current version.

Open Hijackthis and scan. When it finishes checkmark these entries and then press the *fix checked* button

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Win32 Explorer] C:\WINDOWS\System32\explorer32.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Security iGuard] C:\Program Files\Security iGuard\Security iGuard.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Win32 Explorer] C:\WINDOWS\System32\explorer32.exe

O16 - DPF: {9076A11F-5EA6-4A67-BDE9-8D3C7C453DAC} - http://www.fizzlewizzle.com/installfiles/powertools.cab

Delete this file:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\explorer32.exe (Note the 32 in the file name....don't confuse this one with the valid explorer.exe)
........................................
1. Print out or save to notepad these instructions as we will need to do most steps offline and in SAFE MODE (so you won't have this window open to see the instruction from)

2. Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop (Win2k/WinXP only!).
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

How to extract (decompress) zipped or compressed files
http://www.lvsonline.com/compresstut/index.shtml

Note : process.exe is part of the SmitFraudFix tool and is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky, Panda) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm

3. Reboot into Safe Mode
How to start the computer in Safe mode
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...src=sec_doc_nam

4. Once in Safe mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd

Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually.
..............................................
Next:

Delete that old version of Hijackthis and get the proper version, then post a new log.

Please go here:
http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showtopic=216
And follow the instructions to download and scan with the correct version of HijackThis
Maverick
Hi CalamityJane,

Thanks very much for looking into my case. I followed all of your instructions, but my computer still seems to be persisting in its original problem. Below is the scan log after I scanned my computer using HijackThis (I downloaded the updated version you linked to). Hopefully, there will be something you can pick up from this log. Thanks again!

LS CalamityJane
Thanks, that does open up some new sections I needed to see.

Open HijackThis and do a *scan only*. When it finishes place a checkmark against these entries and then press the *fix checked* button

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O20 - Winlogon Notify: 1_blade_1reg - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\1_blade_1.dll (file missing)

O21 - SSODL: SystemCheck2 - {54645654-2225-4455-44A1-9F4543D34546} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbsys2.dll (file missing)

and then, reboot your PC.

Let me know if that resolves the problem?
Maverick
Hi CalamityJane,

Thanks once again for your help. Unfortunately, my situation is not yet resolved sad.gif

The latest scan with AVG and Trojan Hunter reveals nothing:

Here is the log file from Trojan Hunter:

Registry scan
No suspicious entries found
Inifile scan
No suspicious entries found
Port scan
No suspicious open ports found
Memory scan
No trojans found in memory
File scan
C:\hiberfil.sys Not scanned (in use by another application)
C:\pagefile.sys Not scanned (in use by another application)
No trojan files found
16456 files scanned in 1105 seconds

I also scanned with The Cleaner, and came up with nothing.

However, Ad-Aware is now picking up something called "eZula". I fixed it with Ad-Aware, but it appears to be occurring again after I reboot my computer. Here is the log file from the latest scan:

Thanks again for your help.

P.S. - Prior to this, I was infected with Java Byte/Verify. AVG cleaned it, and, as far as I can tell, I am clean. Is there a way to find out for sure?
LS CalamityJane
Ezula is in the System Volume Information directory which is protected by Windows from 3rd party apps (Like AVG and Adaware). So they can see them but cannot "fix" them. This is not an active infection because the System Volume Information folder is the backups of System Restore in WinXP.

One of the best features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a virus infects a computer with this operating system the virus can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

............................
Detections of Byte.verify by AVG are most often files located in the Java cache.
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data...byteverify.html
Sometimes, found a trojan byte.verify are previously viewed webpages containing a malicious appelet in your Java cache (not the Java program itself). These are cached as webpages you view and if you are protected, just viewing them doesn't mean you are infected.

See further details here on what it's about and how to clear your Java cache when you see those:
Virus found in the Java Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (JRE) cache directory
http://java.com/en/download/help/cache_virus.jsp

Here are the instructions on how to manually remove these malicious applets from the JRE cache directory:

1. From the Start button, click Settings > Control Panel
2. In the Control Panel, open the "Java Plug-in Control Panel"
3. Select the Cache Tab
4. Click the Clear button inside the Cache Tab, which will clear your JRE cache directory
.................
For Later versions of java

In the Control Panel, select the Java icon (looks like a coffee cup).

Under the General tab at the bottom your will see a section: "Temporary Internet files"

choose *delete files* and then *ok*.
......................
Sometimes, these are also found in the webpages viewed cache or Temporary Internet Files. To explain why your AV detects it see this example writeup at Computer Associates regarding generic detection of exploits in webpages:

http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusin...s.aspx?ID=38853

Look closely at the location of the files found. When you see that they are in your Temporary internet files folder (or, in the case of Firefox, your profile cache folder) this means that your antivirus program has generic detection of web pages which attempt to exploit a vulnerability in your browser.
QUOTE
This does not necessarily mean that a virus has been found. It merely means that HTML (or other) code was found which attempts to activate additional executable code without the user's express permission.

Note: This detection may be triggered by merely visiting a web page that contains malicious code. It does not necessarily mean your machine has been compromised, nor that your machine is vulnerable to this particular exploit.

If this exploit is being detected in the Temporary Internet Files directory, in order to remove unwanted files from your computer, you will have to remove all off-line content from your PC

The Temporary Internet Files (or cache) folder contains Web page content that is stored on your hard disk for quick viewing. This cache permits Internet Explorer or MSN Explorer to download only the content that has changed since you last viewed a Web page, instead of downloading all the content for a page every time it is displayed. To delete the files in the Temporary Internet Files folder, follow these steps:.

1. In Control Panel, open Internet Options.
2. Click the General tab, and then under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Files.
3. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the Delete all off-line content check box if you want to delete all Web page content that you have made available offline.
4. Click OK.

Similarly, in Firefox delete your cache to remove the offending files found.

I need to know what symptoms, if any remain.

I would recommend this free online Trojan scan of your system to be sure:
http://www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan/

Save the report at the end of that scan if anything is found. Post the results back here.
Maverick
Hi again CalamityJane,

Well, I followed your instructions and did pretty much everything you told me to. Unfortunately, my problem is still there (IE and OE are 'freezing' whenever I start them up and try to browse the web or check my e-mail). What makes the problem even worse is that I am unable to use an on-line scan to check for problems. All of the anti-virus/trojan utilities I have used thus far were either already on my desktop computer or copied to the desktop from my laptop. I am currently writing up this post from my laptop as I cannot use the desktop to browse the web or check my e-mail (as I just mentioned).

So I'm still stumped ... I can't pick up any virus or trojan, but the system is still exhibiting problems.

Any idea on what a possible next move would be?

Perhaps there is a good virus/trojan scanner that I could download, copy to the desktop and run there?

Thanks so much again in advance!
Adrian117
Hi Maverick

I've read through all your posts and CalamityJane's replies. Thus far it seems that, after trying all the above mentioned methods, formatting the PC is your only option to effectively rid your PC system of the damage caused by this infection. If anybody has any other ideas, please help Maverick out.
LS CalamityJane
That's pretty drastic there Adrian.

If you would allow us to continue, we aren't quite finished here.

Maverick, now that all remaining spyware/adware issues have been resolved, you need to install SP2 for your XP and IE.

Not only will this will address numerous security issues in your Operating System and IE, it will also reinstall IE and OE and possibly resolve any problems you are having with those applications.
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Also see this article (if installing SP2 isn't an option for you, but I would recommend that first)

I am using GetRight ver 6.0 beta and have found that this tmp file is always generated on startup only when the Getright Icon is in the system tray.
I emailed Michael Burford re this but could not get a positive reply as to why this happens.
Have you any idea how I could, apart not having GetRigtt open on startup, stopp this file from generating
Keith

QUOTE(Maverick @ Jun 3 2006, 09:50 AM) *

I came across this post while searching for a file ' fee5e75c.tmp' in the following text you refer to GetRight.

Keith[/b]

Hi Keith,

GetRight is a legitimate program and there is nothing wrong with the file you are questioning. You'll notice that Ad-Aware does not target that file and the log you are looking at comes from another software called CCleaner - which only is removing Temporary files, not infected files.

So that file is really not a problem. smile.gif
