QUOTE(Cuncle @ Mar 28 2007, 11:33 AM) *
Aunt Suun, Would you kindly describe precisely what you did to solve the problem. What did you do to change the DNS numbers. Thanks.

I followed the instructions basically as outlined above in "Birdman's" post (#83), changing to "207.69.188.172 (Primary-East Coast), 207.69.188.171 (secondary ) "

p.s. As far as the general issue, I was also having this same update problem with two other programs, a lower-powered utility which includes antivirus/spyware as well as Kaspersky antivirus (on some updates). Two additional anti-spyware programs (one freeware, one not) have never had a problem with updates. As above, changing the DNS settings has "fixed it."
ritapick
I am nervous about making those changes. I don't want to disrupt anything else. My cable is from Advanced Cable Communications...as far as I know - totally unrelated to Earthlink.

Please explain why the company would tell you to use one set of numbers when, to use AdAware, I must use a different set.

Rita

I had one PC with RoadRunner/Brighthouse default DNS - no problem with updates & one configured to OpenDNS settings that would not update. I changed the settings on the 2nd PC to RR default and now it updates.
I preferrred the OpenDNS for faster page loads but this will work for now.

Thanks everyone for all your input.

By the way, the load times for the forum here are very slow, unavailable at times.
champ2u
I also have had the update error for a while now.

I also can confirm that using the TimeWarner/Roadrunner dns servers (using the "Obtain dns server address automatically" setting) allows the Ad-Aware SE updater to work.

I was using the OpenDNS server #'s 208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220 and COULD NOT get the updater to work.

Looks like something with OpenDNS.

Also, hope you guys there at Ad-Aware can fix this problem. Like many other and myself, we like using the OpenDNS servers for faster surfing.

Thanks for keeping us up to date on this issue.
stevesh
I just paid for and downloaded AdAware SE Plus and the first thing it suggests I do is run WebUpdate.
I ran it and it said it found something to update - the progress bar ran all the way out and then I get

The Downloaded Definition File could not be read!

So, anyway, I'm glad I'm not the only one with the problem. Hope they fix it soon.

QUOTE(lav101 @ Mar 29 2007, 08:36 AM) *
I listed those addresses from the registry records.
AND, Earthlink has been doing a redirect of non-existing domains for many months.
Guess y'all just founnd out about it, but I have called them about the new page weeks
ago, and have been bothered by it forr mmonths since my keyboard has keys that
double enter, and sometimes the n is missing. I really don't think Earthlink and
OpenDNS made the same change last week. OpenDNS pays the rent by
that page intercept. They just bypassed AD-AWARE's DNS to make users happy.
They never founnd out what the problem was, nor have you.
Looks like you guys have a complication in your DNS setup now that makes it
hard to detect whether you exist. You are affecting thousands and thousands
of your customers that have not gone to the trouble to contact you.
Check your download stats since last week. I download every week late in the
week, and on Saturday, US Central Time. NOT ANY MORE. I suspect that most
any earthlink customer cannot get updates, and there are millions of us.
I spoke to their switchboard, and argued with their customer satisfaction
department, not customer support. They will not change unless there is a legal
rrequirement forced. Lavasoft is wasting millions of man-hours
worldwide, and 6 or more hours of my time, and counting.
Could you guys figure out the problem and fix it? Looks like it won't go away,
but maybe you will. Check your stats. Thanks.
P.S. Would you like the nnumber for the earthlink switchboard?
Actually, maybe you just stated the problem. One of the guys said that you
use edgesuite.net, and it seems to use acam.net. Maybe some of those DNS
entries need to be removed? Or maybe you have pointed us where we are
nnot supposed to be going (somewhere old)? Where is the update facility
supposed to be going?

I go along with this. Like I said before, I've tried EVERY FIX IN THIS FORUM PERTAINING TO THIS PROBLEM, to no avail. I've spent hours on the phone with those worthless earthlink so called techs, also to no avail.
When I try to update AdAware, I get "ERROR CONNECTING TO SERVER". I've been getting this since about the 21-22nd of March.
Don't tell me to change DNS#'s as it doesn't work. Believe me when I say I've tried everyything mentioned on this forum and the endless links leading away from it. Nothing works for me.

I was even unable to access this forum for a two days. It just got "page unavailable" after a very long period trying to load.

It would be nice if this could be fixed. It's sure not doing Lavasoft any good for sure.
lman
I am also using OpenDNS and am unable to update Ad-Aware. OpenDns is faster than the default server so I will give up on Ad-Aware unless they fix the problem. I'm just glad I didn't buy any of the Ad-Aware products as I had considered.

Please see the following thread for more information about this issue:

http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?s...ic=8148&hl=

I read the other thread, and it said....
The update problems are a result of expired DNS records for our previous definition update servers. Now, some Internet Service Providers DNS servers are routing erroneous domain requests to a custom webpage, rather than to the standard The domain you requested could not be found 404 error page. This stops our updating service from functioning .
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The above Lavasoft innfo made no mention of any plans for you to correct your expired DNS records.
Can they not be corrected??
I am on Windows ME, and it appears that ME on down, or other systems, cannot divert their DNS settings,
nor should we have to depend on this. AD-AWARE is the only software I am having trouble with.
You need to correct your DNS records, yet I don't see anywhere that you are trying to do that.
If you intend to fix YOUR DNS entries, or take other action to correct YOUR problem, please
let us know. If you need to patch our software to point to other servers, then do it.
The whole point of DNS is so things like this can be corrected.
Also, your support forum was down for many hours, and continues to wast the time of many of
your loyal users.
Your DNS problem is preventing any recommendation of your software by us, while most all other vendors
continue to function with no problems. Please let us know if you intend to fix your DNS, or patch, since
the thread that you sent us to is locked, and I cannot put this info to his item. Thanks,

I am glad to know it isn't just me. I have tried everything and nothing seems to work. I get the error
QUOTE
unable to connect to server
and it is 17 days since I have had new updates.

I want to hank Calamity Jane for responding to my email and sending me to this forum.

Has Lavasoft given any indication when the problem will be repaired? I depend on this program. unsure.gif
Davegj
My cable internet connection is with Bresnan Communications. My OS is Windows ME. My last successful update of Ad-Aware SE was: SE1R162 21.03.2007. Since that time each attempted update stops midway and returns the message: "error retrieving update".

I have used Ad-Aware for years with no problems. No new programs have been installed recently nor have any old programs been deleted.

Is this my problem, Bresnan's problem, or Lavasoft's problem? If it is my problem, I need clear step by step instructions on how to fix it (yeah, I need my hand held and to be told everything will be all right smile.gif). If it is Bresnan's problem, I will call them. If it is Lavasoft's problem, I can wait for a "fix", if I am told one is "in the works".

Thanks

It means I'm a custom knifemaker. Why, does it make you nervous for some reason? Can a photograph of a knife really threaten you that much? If so, I'd suggest moving to california and becoming another of their socialist senators.

Can we just stick to the subject at hand, and that's getting a faulty lavasoft to fix the problem keeping thousands + from updating or probably even using the program, as it's so outdated now???? rolleyes.gif

Finally able to edit double post. There is a problem in this forum, BTW. It's almost impossible to access, and when you get in, it's hard to post and often a double post results, plus inability to edit the double post
Mike Hull
lav101, how dare you ASSume my photo is threatening or that I meant it that way, and what to use for an avatar.

I suggest you see someone about your irrational fears.

Lav101-
As a newcomer to the forum (my first message was a few days ago), I hesitated to react to your comment to Mike Hull, but the more I thought about it, the more irritated I became, so here I am. If you're that afraid of a picture of a knife, what are you doing on the internet? I would think that the images that can't be avoided in ordinary innocent surfing would be enough to drive you to hide under the basement stairs with Rosie Odonnell. In what touchie-feelie paradise are you living?

I have a problem with your user name, 'lav101', but you don't hear me complaining about it. I mean, we all know that 'lav' can be an abbreviation of 'lavatory', and not necessarily of 'Lavasoft', and I am personally offended that you would bring what I perceive to be bathroom references to this discussion. But I won't suggest that out of respect for me and everyone else here, you should change your name to something more gentle, cuddly, and pleasant. Maybe something like 'Fluffy101'. Nope, I won't even mention it. Nor would I even think of suggesting that in the future, you might consider limiting your gripes to comments about update problems, as the rest of us have been doing.

handymanherb
Add me to the list, I tried everything they said to, including removing and reinstalling ad-aware, I've tried to do a manual update but couldn't get it to load either
Galupo
I have not been able to update for several weeks. I have Earthlink service and tried the "workaround" they suggested, by changing the DNS address. This allowed the updating to go beyond 5%, but after it is finished, I always get the error message, "The download definitions file could not be read." I downloaded the defs.zip file and tried to replace the defs.ref file with the new one, but strange developments took place. Nothing can be renamed or deleted or added in the AdAware folder. I checked the folder and found that it is "read only." I went in as "administrator" and tried to remove the "read only." This worked temporarily for this folder, but immediately went back to "read only." I tried to do this after disabling both the firewall and the virus detector, and also in "safe mode." But it is impossible to do anything in that folder even with Administrator privileges. This is very strange. I even removed AdAware, rebooted and reinstalled, with the same results. What is going on here?
PRN2
Getting same error message with updates for several days; tried all "help" suggestions even manual download/update but that didn't work. Didn't change DSN numbers cuz earthlink said that wasn't the issue. Now what?

Hello!

do you use OpenDNS?
I had the same problem. Then I checked the update log file, and i noted an error with opendns.
I have change my DNS settings from opendns to my provider dns, and now it works fine!!!

Salut

Felix

Yo, Felix,
What is "OpenDNS"?
Where do u get it?
I have changed my DNS settings to be like the ones Calamity Jane suggested and the ones Earthlink suggested... no workee.

SUCCESS in getting updates past the 5% mark !!!!

Step 1. Remove Ad-Aware from your computer
Step 2. Clean your registry (to get rid of old settings retained in your registry)
Step 3. For Earthlink users:
See http://kb.earthlink.net/case.asp?article=187109
It explains how to get to DNS settings on your XP computer.
Step 4. Put in Calamity Jane's East Coast or West Coast DNS number in the "Preferred DNS Server" box.
See: http://kb.earthlink.net/case.asp?article=187117 that shows the correct DNS settings
Step 5. Re-install Ad-Aware

It should work !! Thank you Calamity !! Cleaning the registry was the extra ingredient that let mine work.

Spirit F4
Mike Hull
Spirit F4, that only works for a certain percent of the people having troubles. It doesn't work for me at all, nor does it seem to work for many others postig here.

Lavasoft must have a fix for this. The truth being, 90% of people will never find out about this DNS business anyway. Isn't it up to Lavasoft to make their servers compatible with the internet?

All I ever get is "Error connecting to server" when I try to download updates. It's been some weeks now.
alantothefourthpower
Understand from comment/answers that "lavasoft is working on a permanent solution" re problem with update server.

I wonder as to what went sour to cause this problem, one that a number of peope seem to be having.

How long the thing will be problematic, that is unable to retreive updates a user is told they should have.
gar1
Just wish to add myself to those who get an error when updating, consistently for several weeks and in spite of reloading etc etc. And Earthlink is not my ISP.

HOWEVER my update bombs at the 61% level not 5%.

I look forward to a lavasoft solution.

mad.gif Lavasoft has had enough time...I am sick and tired of their excuses and suggestions that WE have to change anything. They either created the problem or have allowed it to persist. I suggest we try to post an alternative spyware provider and post the company's name here. The best way to get a company to get off their butts and correct problems they created is to pull the plug on them and find another provider. So, let's post names of other providers that we can turn to. This garbage about us having to change anything is a lame smoke screen from Lavasoft in order to hide their defective processes.

I too was having this problem... after reading one of the 'stickys' on this issue it mentioned something about a "DNS ISSUE"... I use OPENDNS as my DNS server... a very popular server at that! What I did was revert back to using my ISP (Comcast) and that 'corrected' the problem....

If Lavasoft read this then they now know that they have a problem with OPENDNS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And should take corrective action immediately!

Hope this help you and others reading this!

LS Joakim
We are dealing with this situation as quickly as we can, rest assured. Since it's a problem with DNS records that are out of our hands, we can only progress as fast as the people we are dealing with.

LS,

Perhaps you should add to the 'sticky' somehting about OPENDNS as it is a VERY VERY popular DNS service!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Since this clearly a Lavasoft problem. I will wait until you get your software updates "back on line."
Do you have any "guesstimate" of how long that might be? If it is more than another week or two, I would suggest extending subscriptions for the appropriate amount of downtime experienced for the average account effected. (I use Earthlink.)

Sorry. I have posted this to Mike...
I believe that you made this statement, and I was not going to reply, but you have violated your own rule.
He would have dropped it if you had, as per your wishes.
Sorry about the comment I made. I was probably thinking about the rules that many companies have about
zero tolerance for threats, or the horror movie I saw the other day - that looks like a big knife.
As far as my "new" status, I have just never bothered to sign up on this forum before this, but have been a user
for quite a few years. It appears that my "new" status might have caused adverse reaction.
I worked for a big bank for 24 years, that made us take tests online about threats. I have worked with IBM
mainframes for 35+ years. I had Prodigy and tried 11 or more providers before chosing Earthlink over Mindspring
many years ago. I own 800+ domain names, and various websites (this was all reponse to my "new" status).
Whatever. As you said, this LAVASOFT thing needs to be resolved. Actually several years ago, we had sort of
the same issue, and they were slow to respond. Anyway, as I said, sorry for the comment. Didn't know you
work with knives. I have guns and knives. I am from Alabama, not California. Ok.

I am quoting my previous message. After many weeks, I seem to have solved the problem. I uninstalled AdAware, then used Regedit to go into the registry and delete all references to Adaware (something I do not like to do), then rebooted and reinstalled AdAware on my D: partition instead of the C: partition. The update went smoothly.
A strange thing that may have been responsible for my problems is that the Lavasoft>Adaware folders are still on my C: drive and cannot be deleted, even with Adminstrator access. They are "read-only_ and when I go into their properties I cannot permanently remove the "read-only" attribute.

Unfortunately, those are the same two DNS numbers that have been given on eveyone of the last 8 pages. They only work for a small number of people. They don't work for me. I continue to get, "Error connecting to server, please try updating at a later date".
