I was infected by a spysheriff program some time ago. I got rid of it easily enough by uninstalling it with the add/remove programs feature and a real spyware searcher. The program is gone, and has been for quite some time but I have yet to regain control of my desktop wallpaper. I know this is a silly problem but it is starting to get on my nerves, I don't have the "infected" warning wallpaper, instead I just have a solid color, which I can choose but I can not put an image up.

What is weird is that I can see the image that I have set as my wallpaper just before Windows finishes loading and just before it shuts down, but then it disappears and I am left with the solid color again. I am a complete novice when it comes to technical issues regarding computers. I haven't removed the registry files associated with spysheriff yet because I know enough to know how to seriously screw up my computer.

Is going into regedit.exe the only way to remove these files or is there some easier way that I won't run the risk of destroying my computer?

Thanks for your help, if there's anything I need to do to help you out let me know. Again, I am a novice in these matters and I'll need fairly detailed instructions on how to run programs--such as HijackThis and so forth.

Run a full updated ad-aware scan (also uncheck "scan for negligible risk entries").

Then post a hijackthis log.

How do I run a HijackThis scan, what steps do I need to take: will I need to go into Safe Mode, etc. Just give me a brief walkthrough if you would, thanks man, I really appreciate this. And do you need the AdAware Log?

Nevermind, an update for my virus scan took care of it by itself. Thanks though. I'll tell you if the problem comes back though.
