I was infected by a spysheriff program some time ago. I got rid of it easily enough by uninstalling it with the add/remove programs feature and a real spyware searcher. The program is gone, and has been for quite some time but I have yet to regain control of my desktop wallpaper. I know this is a silly problem but it is starting to get on my nerves, I don't have the "infected" warning wallpaper, instead I just have a solid color, which I can choose but I can not put an image up.
What is weird is that I can see the image that I have set as my wallpaper just before Windows finishes loading and just before it shuts down, but then it disappears and I am left with the solid color again. I am a complete novice when it comes to technical issues regarding computers. I haven't removed the registry files associated with spysheriff yet because I know enough to know how to seriously screw up my computer.
Is going into regedit.exe the only way to remove these files or is there some easier way that I won't run the risk of destroying my computer?
Thanks for your help, if there's anything I need to do to help you out let me know. Again, I am a novice in these matters and I'll need fairly detailed instructions on how to run programs--such as HijackThis and so forth.
