Full Version: System Alert: "System detected virus activities..."
Lavasoft Support Forums > Archived Topics > Archives: Resolved/Inactive Topics > Resolved/Inactive HijackThis Logs
DavidE
I was handed a PC with XP that keeps giving the message: System Alert: "System detected virus activities. These may impact the performance of your computer. Please, use antimalware software to clean and protect your system from parasite programs. Click this baloon to get all available software".

I have already run AdAware several times and let it delete the suggested files. I have also run CCleaner. I have Hijack This and ComboBox installed. A trojan was detected at one point, and I'll try to get the name of it on the next scan. Any suggestions on what steps to take? What log files should I post?

Thanks.
DavidE

Here are the logs. The AVG might be missing the latest update. The PC I'm trying to fix is not connected to the network. Let me know if that is a problem, and I will have to move it to another location and set it up on a network.

Hi,DavidE

First i ask that you don't go fixing anything just yet i know what the problme is
so if you go and jump steps on me makes it hard on my fix.

And yes please if you have some way of downloading the AVG anti-spyware
updates do so you can get it here then just run the file.

Manual updates
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

Once done doing the update show me a new HijackThis logfile and no more for now.

Gogo wink.gif
DavidE
OK, I ran the AVG update. Here is the Hijack log. Earlier, I followed all the instructions and ran all scans in safe mode. I went ahead and let each program clean or quarantine all the suggested files. I hope that does not mess you up. The PC no longer gets the "System Alert" message.

I'll be away for awhile and won't be able to work on it until later today or tomorrow. Thanks for all the help.

Hi,DavidE

Well logfile look good nice job the only thing i see here is this

C:\Documents and Settings\DAWN\Application Data\U3\0000051020005965\LaunchPad.exe

Do you know of this ???

Gogo wink.gif
DavidE
No, I don't know what Launchpad.exe is. I know that it can sometimes be used to launch malware. I doubt that the owner of the computer will know. Would you suggest deleting it? I'm currently in another building and will not be able to work on it until later.

Thank you.
HJThis
Hey,DavidE

No keep the file for now i will have a look around see what i find out
if i don't get back at you send me a PM on this.

Hi,DavidE

I don't think we have a problme here it's just because it's running
from here C:\Documents and Settings\DAWN\Application Data\

but again i don't think it's a problme.

Ai_Tak
submit
C:\WINDOWS\System32\gwquvw.dll
to
http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexx.html
and post the results here.
DavidE
Ai_Tak,

I've already returned the computer to the owner. I did a search on the file name and see that it could be a virus or malware. Would you suggest getting the computer back from the owner and checking it?

Thanks for responding.
HJThis
Hey,DavidE

Well seing that i did not get any feedback here no need to upload that file
it's a bad file that was removed in my post #8 look for yourself you will see
that this file here is now gone.

O21 - SSODL: carbinyl - {8d8c2387-7f80-4022-9be6-43630a969558} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\gwquvw.dll

It's part of the AntiVerminser, Trojan i don't see a need to get the PC back for
a file that's no longer here.

DavidE
HJThis,

Yes, I see now. I looked at the first log I posted and forgot about the second one. Anyway, I kept it for a few days and made sure that the system alert message did not reappear. All the scans were clean.

Thanks again for all the help.

Hey,DavidE

The only thing I would of had you do is my last steps here
if you can call them they should get this done.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

1. Turn off System Restore.
* On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* CHECK Turn off System Restore.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.
3. Turn ON System Restore.
* On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.

Then create a new restore point once you have System Restore back on.
To create a new System Restore Point, click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore.
When the System Restore Utility opens, click "Create a Restore Point" then click Next.
Enter a name for this Restore Point, and click Create.

Clean out your Temporary Internet files.
Internet Explorer
Close Internet Explorer and close any instances of Windows Explorer.
Click Start -> Control Panel and then double-click Internet Options.
On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
Click OK.

Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed)
Open Firefox and go to Tools -> Options.
Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
Click OK to close the Options window.
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
2. Click once on the Security tab
3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
a. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
b. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
c . Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
d. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
e. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
f. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
g. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
h. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

And please have a look at the great info by Mr,TK
So how did I get infected in the first place
