I'm writing a script as part of a add on to NetReg. Is there a way to tell what the date of the defs.ref file is by looking at its contents? I need some way to programmatically tell if the file is out of date, without relying on the timestamp of the file. You'd be surprised how many people will modify that.

The contents of the defs file will be protected to help prevent malware from targeting the defs file.

Maybe you could run a checksum on the file and compare that to a known defs file that is maintained centrally and kept up to date.
