sarumkernow
Hi all. New user here.
I hope you can help.

When I boot up my PC is reasonably quick.
However, when I click my icon to log on it can take absolutley ages to load. This morning it took 20 minutes.
CPU is Intel Celeron 2.93 GHz with 192 Mb RAM.

I have prepared a HijackThis log which follows.

I'd be grateful for any help you can offer.

Thanks.

sarumkernow.

Hello There, I'm konda new here too but just wanted to let u know,1st, u have a lack of RAM (192 just isnt enough). 2nd, i noticed that boot times (and logon) are seriously slow when u install alot of fonts.

Hope it helps.

Guy.
sarumkernow
Thanks GuyZapPa.

RAM is certainly something that I shall be addressing.

I don't think fonts is the problem here.
I have no more fonts than when I purchased the PC but the slow down in performance is very noticeable.
Internet Explorer runs very slow too.

Thanks.

Hello,sarumkernow & Welcome

Please run this online scanner also run this tool for me
then come back here with both logs.

Please run a free online scan with Kaspersky AntiVirus (works only with MS Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher).
Go to http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner and click the "Kaspersky Online Scanner" button (NOT "Kaspersky File Scanner").
  • In the new window that opens, click the "Accept" button to accept the user agreement, install the ActiveX control, and download the program.
  • When you get the Windows dialog asking if you want to install this software, click the "Install" button.
  • When the "Update progress" line changes to "Ready" and the "NEXT ->" button lights up with a green arrow, click it.
  • Click on the "Scan Settings" button, and in the next window select the "extended" database, and click Ok.
  • Under "Please select a target to scan:", click My Computer to start the scan.
When the scan is finished, click the "Save as Text" button, and save the file as kavscan.txt to your Desktop, close the Kaspersky On-line Scanner window, and post the text in kavscan.txt in your next reply.

------------------

Please download ComboFix and save it to your desktop.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.

When it's done running it will produce a log for you. Please post that log in your next reply.

Important Note - Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

On the plain norton anti-virus (2006) box is says the minimum requirement of ram to run is 256 MB, you have Internet Security, which requires even more resources, so your ram is one problem.

Also you have a celeron processor, which is a stripped down version of it's pentium counterpart, for the most part what is taken out is half of the (expensive) L2 cache on the chip. While this does cut the price, it kills the chip's performance.

You also have Microsoft AntiSpyware installed, this could potentially conflict with norton, on top of that the program isn't even very good, they went through over a year of beta testing (but only made it up to beta 2!). They hardly fixed very many of thousands of bugs, fixed a lot of false positive (not all), and seemed to just give up and release it to the public unfinished. For both those reasons, I suggest you uninstall Microsoft AntiSpyware.

Hi HJThis.

Thanks for the help.

I have tried running the Online scanner but without success. I click the accept button and the new window changes to the online scanner window. Then I am asked if I wish to install the ActiveX control to which I click Install, however the window then reverts back to the same as before. ie the one with the accept prompt, however the accept button has now disappeared.

That's it. Nothing else. No more scanner window. I have tried this several times without success. Which is why I've taken a while to respond to you.

What now?

Thanks,

sarumkernow

Did you get the combo fix log yet? If so post it.
Also, did you read my post about Microsoft AntiSpyware?

Hi Ai Tak

I have uninstalled MS AntiSpyware as you suggested.
ComboFix has been temporarily withdrawn so I am waiting for it to reappear.
In the meantime I shall install some more RAM, probably 512Mb.

As soon as ComboFix is sorted I will scan and post.

Hi,sarumkernow

Are you running the windows firewall, if so see what happens when you Disable it.
also did you think of maybe doing the same to the firewall, your running now.

Please download System Repair Engineer by Smallfrogs and save it to your desktop:

*Right-click sreng2.zip, select Extract All, and extract it to its own folder.
*Double-click SREng.exe to run it.
*Select Smart Scan and check (tick) Verify the digital signatures of process modules.
*Click on the Scan button.

When the scan is complete, click on the Save Reports button and save the log to your desktop.
Please attach the log in your next reply. Don’t post it.

Note : You would have to rename SREngLog.log to SREngLog.txt before attaching it.

Hi again HJThis,

Thanks for the reply.
I have installed an additional 512Mb of RAM and the log on time has improved dramatically, from 20 mins to 1 min 40 secs. Wow!
I think that was what was needed.
I am not running the Windows firewall, only Norton's.
I think everything is cured however, I have attached the SRE scan report just in case.
Once again, many thanks for all your help.
