Full Version: Ad-Aware Behavior May Be Clue To Damage

I have two desktop PC's running Win98SE. Both have the same version of Ad-Aware installed, but it does not behave the same on both.

Machine #1 is not known to have any serious problems and Ad-Aware works normally.

Machine #2 has been having problems with Internet and E-mail server access for months. CCAPP.exe in Norton Internet Security tends to abend frequently.

On Machine #2, AdAware will scan and post its scan results on the screen OK, but after I select the families and click "Next", the "Quarantine" button is greyed out. I can only click "Next". Doing that causes an automatic "Quarantining selection" spinner to appear, then the "Deleting selection" spinner. The program ALWAYS turns "groggy" during "Deleting Selection" and stays that way with a full spinner for hours. If I press "Ctrl+Alt+Delete", AdAware does NOT say "Not responding."

Does anyone (including Lavasoft analysts) know well enough how AdAware interacts with Win98SE (or Windows in general) to suggest certain Windows modules, (e.g., Rundll32.exe), that may be malfunctioning, on the basis of the effect on AdAware? I'm thinking that if I can repair those modules, they may be underlying my other problems also.

Thank you for any suggestions.

Hello

Is the configuration the same on both machines, most important is if there is other security software installed. You mentioned Norton Internet Security on one machine, I would like to suggest that you try to disable it when running a scan with Ad-Aware and see if you can delete the items in the quarantine.
