Hi,

I have been trying to get my pc virus/spyware free for weeks now. I currently have tried ad-aware, spybot, a-squared, cleanup, avg, and windows defender. I have been checking through your forums and you guys seem to be doing a great job, so i am hoping you can help me out. I can delete/quarentine the spyware/trojan but as soon as I restart it comes back. Please help!!

Here is my HiJackThis log:

Hello nottim, and welcome to Lavasoft Support Forums. My name is Charles and I will be dealing with your log today.
Please run a scan with the latest version of Ad-Aware, making sure that you save the log to post in your next reply.

Make a list of all the programs installed on your computer:
Open HijackThis
Click the Config... button, then go to the Misc Tools section.
Press Open Uninstall Manager. You'll see a list of programs.
Select Save List... - save it to your Desktop.
The file "uninstall_list.txt" will be created.
Copy and paste the contents of this file to your next reply.

Post me back the uninstall list, Ad-Aware log, along with a new HijackThis log
Thanks,
Charles

Hey there,
Those files you see are all legitimate, they are meant to be there. smile.gif
Please print off a copy of these instructions, and also save them to a Notepad file on your desktop, so they are easily accessible.
We are going to boot into Safe Mode later in the fix, and there is no internet access.

We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender, click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Now, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode.
This is done by rebooting Windows and pressing F8 at boot/Windows startup, usually right after the beep.
Then select Safe Mode from the list.

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click runThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Post this in your next reply.

Please post me back the contents of Report.txt, along with a new HijackThis log.
Thanks,
Charles

Hi Charles,

When I rebooted into safemode there was an administrator account as well as my account to log into. I used the administrator profile to run the sdfix, hope that was the right way to do it. I have it setup so that my account was "supposed" to be the administrator. Looks like the sdfix caught a com+ trojan. Any idea of the security threat this would cause on my pc? Thanks again, here are the logs you requested:

Hey there, let's continue..
QUOTE
Any idea of the security threat this would cause on my pc?

This is a worm in the Sdbot family, which are quite dangerous infections to have on your PC. If you are worried, you can change your passwords for online banking institiutions etc. from another PC.
Please print off a copy of these instructions, and also save them to a Notepad file on your desktop, so they are easily accessible.
We are going to boot into Safe Mode later in the fix, and there is no internet access.

Go to Start | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if they exist):

BitTorrent 4.2.2
BitTornado 0.3.7
LimeWire PRO 4.9.37

You are using peer-to-peer programs.
These are what we call an optional removal. However, anytime you are running any type of peer-to-peer application, you are more prone to infection by malware, and this is probably how you became infected in the first place. The choice to remove them is entirely up to you, but I would strongly recommend that you do.
If you do not want to, please at least refrain from using any peer-to-peer programs for the remainder of my fix.
For more information about infections as a result of p2p programs, take a look here: http://p2p.malwareremoval.com/

Now, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode.
This is done by rebooting Windows and pressing F8 at boot/Windows startup, usually right after the beep.
Then select Safe Mode from the list.

Delete this folder:

C:\SDFix

If you removed the P2P programs, please delete these folders:

C:\Program Files\BitTorrent
C:\Program Files\BitTornado
C:\Program Files\LimeWire

Reboot into Normal Mode again.

Please run Panda's ActiveScan.
Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
A new window will open, click the Check Now button.
Enter your personal details.
Click the big Scan Now button.
It will ask to install various content - please allow this.
It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan, which may take a while.
When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan.
When the scan completes, click the See Report button.
Click Save Report and save the file to your Desktop, so you can post this log in your next reply.

Please post me back the Panda report.
Thanks,
Charles

These files you said are supposed to be there such as System Volume Information and RECYCLER are in my C: and in my D:, which is a separate HDD, and I have no access to them...I havent seen any of these ever before...also, looks like there are still a lot of ads on my pc from the Panda scan...

Thanks again for all your help!!! smile.gif

Hey there,
Please print off a copy of these instructions, and also save them to a Notepad file on your desktop, so they are easily accessible.
We are going to boot into Safe Mode later in the fix, and there is no internet access.
Even though the Panda log looks quite bad, it is very deceptive; making you look like you have more infections than you actually do. This is because most of the files that it found in your case are cookies, which can easily be removed and are not particularly harmful to you.

Now, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode.
This is done by rebooting Windows and pressing F8 at boot/Windows startup, usually right after the beep.
Then select Safe Mode from the list.

Let's clean out your temporary internet files:
Close all open windows before we start.
Go to Start | Control Panel | Internet Options | General.
Click the Delete Cookies button.
Next to it, click the Delete Files button.
When prompted, place a check in: 'Delete all offline content', click OK

If you have Firefox installed, we need to clean out these temporary files as well:
Go to Tools | Options.
Click Privacy.
Press the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
Click OK to finish, before closing it.
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.

Now we'll clean other temporary files and your Recycle Bin:
Go to Start | Run | type: cleanmgr | OK.
Let it scan your system for files to remove.
Make sure 'Temporary Files', 'Temporary Internet Files', and 'Recycle Bin' are the only things checked.
Press OK to remove them.

Set your system to show all files.
Navigate to Start | My Computer | Tools | Folder Options.
Select the View tab. Under the "Hidden Files and Folders" heading, select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.

Next, please find and delete the following folders (if present):

C:\Program Files\Common Files\{348F99EE-0726-1033-1106-030331060001}
C:\WINDOWS\Q2hyaXMgTWl0dG9u

Reboot into Normal Mode again.

In your next post, please let me know how things are running now.
Thanks,
Charles

Hey Charles,

Its hard to tell if I got rid of those 2 or not, i deleted both of those files...when i boot into safe mode i can access either my user account or administrator account, i was the only user account a few months ago.

I also seen a "system 32" folder in the c:\windows directory with some 3com files included in it, and even after "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option." I still see alot of greyed out folders i cannot access like system volume information and RECYCLER.

I ran another ad-aware scan and a Panda scan, they are below....Hope u can help...its looking alot better anyways smile.gif

Hey nottim,
QUOTE
I also seen a "system 32" folder in the c:\windows directory with some 3com files included in it, and even after "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option." I still see alot of greyed out folders i cannot access like system volume information and RECYCLER.

This folder is meant to be there; the contents of it are essential for the correct running of your computer. Things like "System Volume Information" and "Recycler" are not meant to be accessed- the first is for System Restore, whilst the second is your Recycle Bin.

Your logs are looking clean to me, but there's a few things we need to do. Ad-Aware is throwing up an infected file in your System Restore files, so we need to purge your restore points, and create a new, clean on incase you need to roll your PC back to an earler time.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer, then click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab near the top of the window.
Check Turn off System Restore, click Apply, and then click OK.
More information on how to disable your system restore can be found here.

We want to create a new, clean restore point. Please first reboot your computer.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer, then click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab near the top of the window.
Uncheck "Turn off System Restore", click Apply, and then click OK.

Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools, and select System Restore.
In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point - Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup".
Click Create, and after it has created the restore point, click "Close".
Further instructions on creating a restore point can be found here

The Panda results also show that there is an infected file left in your Recycle Bin, so I'd like you to emtpy it for me, thus removing this infected file.
What I'd like to know from you now is: does your computer seem to be clean? Basically, are you having any more spyware-related problems?
Thanks,
Charles
nottim
Hey Charles,

I logged back in as administrator in safe mode and deleted that file in the recycle bin, cause it wasn't in the recycle bin on my desktop..I do not have any more spyware related issues...but then again i didn't notice any problems until I checked using ad-aware and the other programs...

I think I'm all good now though..

THANK YOU SOOO MUCH..you do not even understand how hard I tried to get rid of all that junk...I really appreciate all the time and effort you have taken to help me out.

Where can I donate???? Send me a link please!
nottim
oh...and I just restarted windows defender...almost forgot about that...thanks again!
rookie147
Great job!
Unfortunately, you're not allowed to donate at this site, we pride ourselves on providing a free service to clean up your computer.
Now that you're free from malware, please follow these simple steps to decrease the likelihood of getting re-infected again:

Set your system to not show all files.
Navigate to Start | My Computer | Tools | Folder Options.
Select the View tab. Under the "Hidden Files and Folders" heading, select "Show hidden files and folders".
Check: Hide file extensions for known file types
Check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.

Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.
Either enable 'Automatic Updates' under Start | Control Panel | Automatic Updates, or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:
Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.
Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.
SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.
Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place
If, of course, you encounter any more problems, please let me know and I'll try my best to sort them out for you.
Thanks and happy computing,
Charles
nottim
Files hidden..windows update on...and I have all those spyware programs installed now...

Thanks again Charles, it's really appreciated.
