Head Hunter
Hi!

I have been recently stuck with a problem of removing from my computer what looks to be a dialer.
It pops-up occasionally and a window contains something written in Italian. The Ad-aware did not solve it for me, nor did Norton Antivirus.
Thereof, I did make a HijackThis log file and truly hope for a help here.

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1
Scan saved at 23:56:27, on 2007.01.13.

HJThis
Hello,Head Hunter & Welcome

First Hijackthis needs to be in it's own folder
Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C:
then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT. then move Hijackthis.exe to that folder

Then have a look at the two links in the quote box at the
bottom of my page do as is asked. then show me an updated Ad-Aware Se logfile
and a new HijackThis logfile.

Hi, HJThis!

After reading your instructions, one issue that caught my attention and that I definitely need to resolve before starting concerns deleting a system file while in Safe Mode (in particular C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winjrs32.dll or xxfgmy.dll).
Which program or application to use to delete these files? As I previously had problems both doing it through command prompt or wiping it out with Norton utilities.

Hi,Head Hunter

All you should need to do is goto where the files are then
just right click and delete.

Head Hunter
Just checked the amount of characters in the AVG anti-spyware log and it is very long with over 1,000,000 characters.
If it would be ok, may I post the log as an .txt file attachment in my next reply?

Hi,Head Hunter

You are using Download Accelerator - DAP Be informed that it delivers popup/popunder ads, and tracks your internet usage. You can find safer alternatives here: http://www.spywareinfoforum.info/downloads...cat=dlman#dlman
I suggest you remove it. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove it

-------------------

Please print out or copy these instructions to Notepad as the internet will not be available to you at certain points of the removal process (whilst in Safe Mode). If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fix.

--------------------

View hidden files and folders:
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

---------------------

Restart your computer in Safe Mode.
  1. If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  2. Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  3. Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu will appear. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  4. Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  5. Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe Mode.
  6. Login on your usual account.
If you need further assistance with Safe Mode, see Symantec

----------------------

Run HijackThis
Scan and when it finishes, put a check mark only next to these following items : (if present)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: winjrs32 - winjrs32.dll (file missing)

Close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open
Click Fix Checked
Close HijackThis

-----------------------

Next, please find and delete the following files/folders (if present):
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winjrs32.dll<---This file

-----------------------

Then do a reboot and get this here done

You're using an outdated version of Java (latest one is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6). Please update and remove the older versions. Do the following:
Go to Start | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs
Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
It should have this icon next to it:
Select it and click Remove.
Then download and install the newest version from here (scroll down to find it):
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6

-----------------

And let me see a new HijackThis logfile.

Hi,Head Hunter

Nice work now please take these last steps for for me then come back with
some feedback tell me if everything went ok.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

1. Turn off System Restore.
* On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* CHECK Turn off System Restore.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.
3. Turn ON System Restore.
* On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.

Then create a new restore point once you have System Restore back on.
To create a new System Restore Point, click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore.
When the System Restore Utility opens, click "Create a Restore Point" then click Next.
Enter a name for this Restore Point, and click Create.

Clean out your Temporary Internet files.
Internet Explorer
Close Internet Explorer and close any instances of Windows Explorer.
Click Start -> Control Panel and then double-click Internet Options.
On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
Click OK.

Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed)
Open Firefox and go to Tools -> Options.
Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
Click OK to close the Options window.
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
2. Click once on the Security tab
3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
a. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
b. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
c . Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
d. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
e. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
f. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
g. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
h. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

And please have a look at the great info by Mr,TK
So how did I get infected in the first place

Hi, HJThis!

Well, as you requested, this what I have to report.
After restarting the computer, all the programs are slow to respond. For example, The Firefox would not load for some 10 min. Moreover, it is impossible to work in the Firefox since it would not allow me to finish anything I start there.

Then I decided to check my CPU usage and surprise, surprise - CPU was at 100%. More disturbing is the fact that while I am not doing anything at the computer, it still eats all 100% of CPU and would not drop. Even after I end the process of running the Firefox it shows CPU usage at 100%. After awhile it shows an icon that the computer is running at low virtual memory.

I am desperate at finding a solution here. I don't know, maybe I don't get something but nothing like this has ever happened to me and therefore I can't get a clue what's wrong.

Desperate for help,

Head Hunter

Hi,Head Hunter

Sorry to hear this my man let's try this new tool i started using see what if anything
we may find or not, by the way have you installed anything new like Ram or hardware
before the problme started on you.

---------------

Please download ComboScan by Deckard and save it to your desktop:

*Close all applications and windows (including this one).
*Double-click on comboscan.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
*When the scan is complete, a text file will open – ComboScan.txt.
*Copy (Ctrl + A then Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of ComboScan.txt in your next reply.
*A folder, C:\ComboScan, will also open. In it will be another text file, Supplementary.txt.
*Please attach Supplementary.txt to your post.

Note: Some firewalls may warn that sigcheck.exe is trying to access the internet - please ensure that you allow sigcheck.exe permission to do so.

Hi, again!

After watching the computer performance for some time after closing the Firefox it seems that CPU usage dropped to normal. Therefore, I guess it is related to the Firefox after all. However, I still don't get, why while I am working in the Firefox all the processes are very slow to respond. I couldn't write even a reply in this forum due to the fact that after each and every minute the internet would freeze with CPU usage constantly at 100%.

Good that I am able to work from another computer at the moment wink.gif

Answering your question, then, no, I have not installed any RAM or hardware.

I will definitely try this ComboScan; however, I will have to leave now for a work and will scan the computer probably later today.

Thanks so far!

Now, just reached my work. Much of snow today here in Latvia and it was quite difficult to ride.

Anyway, I thought too reinstalling the Firefox would solve the problem. Nah, nothing happened. It looks that something else is eating up the memory resources. I did manage to run the Ad-aware and it did find some dialers; however, I was not able to save the log and have no information to post, yet.

HJThis
Hi,Head Hunter

Hmm i don't see much here other then this item here

The steps that I am about to suggest involve modifying the registry. Modifying the registry can be dangerous so we will make a backup of the registry first.

Backup the Registry:

Navigate to Start | Run and paste the following:

regedit /e c:\registrybackup.reg

Now click OK
It won't appear to be doing anything, that's normal.
Your mouse pointer may turn to an hour glass for a minute.
Please continue when it no longer has the hour glass.

-----------------

Open Notepad and copy and paste the following quotebox into a new text document. (Don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4!)
( Do not copy the word quote)

QUOTE
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer\Run]
"{CCA06A24-0320-1062-0508-060220060173}"=-

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your Desktop.
It should look like this:Click to view attachment
Double-click on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click Yes/OK.

----------------

Please make sure to do a reboot or Regfix will not work then do this online scan for me
show me the report.txt. let's see what if anything will show up for us.

Please run a free online scan with Kaspersky AntiVirus (works only with MS Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher).
Go to http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner and click the "Kaspersky Online Scanner" button (NOT "Kaspersky File Scanner").
  • In the new window that opens, click the "Accept" button to accept the user agreement, install the ActiveX control, and download the program.
  • When you get the Windows dialog asking if you want to install this software, click the "Install" button.
  • When the "Update progress" line changes to "Ready" and the "NEXT ->" button lights up with a green arrow, click it.
  • Click on the "Scan Settings" button, and in the next window select the "extended" database, and click Ok.
  • Under "Please select a target to scan:", click My Computer to start the scan.
When the scan is finished, click the "Save as Text" button, and save the file as kavscan.txt to your Desktop, close the Kaspersky On-line Scanner window, and post the text in kavscan.txt in your next reply.

Ai_Tak
Tell me about your norton installation. What year is it from? What is the date on your virus definitions? Is norton expired?
Head Hunter
Hi, Ai_Tak!

Well, my Norton is from 2003 . rolleyes.gif Managed to renew the subscription all the time. The date on virus definitions is February 14.
I was not overly satisfied with the selected choice of using the same Norton for these years and moreover, the program has recently stopped to do Auto-protect and update definitions. Therefore, I was in the process of switching the anti-virus software to most probably Avast that was suggested by both my friend and HJThis.

Head Hunter
Ai_Tak
Norton 2003 has been obsolete for a number of years now, I'm surprised you could have renewed it at all this year and last year.

I'm not a big fan of avast really. The norton antivirus 2007 is pretty good.
Head Hunter
Hi, HJThis!

Well, what I can say...as long as I don't surf the web everything is ok.
Therefore, I could not complete Kaspersky virus scan even though I worked through Internet Explorer. It began scanning; however, the scanning froze at about 1000 files being scanned. That's all. Then I had to end the process.
That indeed begins to look kinda weird. sad.gif

Head Hunter
HJThis
Hi,Head Hunter

Sorry to hear it my man now are we stell getting the popup

Gogo wink.gif
Head Hunter
The good news are that, owing to your efforts, the pop-up has gone. smile.gif
And you already know the bad news regarding the Firefox and IE... sad.gif
HJThis
Hey,Head Hunter

I have something for you it's not to say this will fix the problme but who can say for sure

*Right-click sreng2.zip, select Extract All, and extract it to its own folder.
*Double-click SREng.exe to run it.
*Select Smart Scan and check (tick) Verify the digital signatures of process modules.
*Click on the Scan button.

When the scan is complete, click on the Save Reports button and save the log to your desktop.
Please attach the log in your next reply. Don’t post it.

Note : You would have to rename SREngLog.log to SREngLog.txt before attaching it.

A word of warning this is for this user here it is not to be used as a fix all. use it something goes way wrong

Head Hunter
Hey, again!

You know what's interesting, is that I don't have such a directory/path on my computer.

could you please try it once more and make sure not to add the word quote.

Well, I guess a hat tip has to go to Ai_Tak wink.gif
After thinking over the Norton stuff, I thought I would run Sys Internals that Microsoft offers on its site to actually see which processes are working while my CPU is at 100%.
I found out that some Norton utilities as well as Norton Firewall, I was using, are working pretty intensely. Therefore, I decided to get rid of them since they indeed were outdated by any means. Voile, it indeed speeded up the process.
Everything solved...not quite.
While everything is working smoothly in IE, the firefox is still freezing from time to time although for a shorter period than before but enough to bug me out working in such the environment.
However, the IE readiness to respond allowed me to run online Kaspersky scan. Therefore, as suggested by you before I ran it and below is the log.

I will definitely post as well how OTMoveIt went for me.

Now make sure the first thing you do is run and get an Anti-Virus scanner
and clean out the Temp files and cookies from Firefox or do a reinstall of FF

Dunno what to say...
Deleted the cookies, temp files and reinstalled FireFox, but still after every 10-20 seconds the CPU usage jumps up to 100% and freezes browsing and even post writing.

Hey, HJThis!

Wanted to share the solution I found that reanimated the Firefox biggrin.gif
Well, after searching for a while, I ran into this explanation:

"Here's a solution that worked for me. Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\%user%\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\default.eu5 folder (the last folder may have a different name, like xxxxxxxx.default). Delete all the sessionstore.js files. My Firefox ran fine for months, and then got so slow as to be unusable. The text wouldn't keep up with typing, scrolling wouldn't keep up. The processor was going to 100% due to firefox when this happened. I found 10000 sessionstore.js files in the folder. When I deleted these files, and the cookies, Firefox was back to normal. "

As one of the users explained, the sessionstore.js file became read-only and began creating a new one on each new Firefox session. When I opened my folder, there were about 5000 sessionstore files. Of course, after deleting all of them, ta da - the Firefox was back to normal. biggrin.gif

In addition, I want to once again thank you for your efforts and patience that lead me through the curing process as well as for helpful hints at how to make my computer a safer and stronger environment to work in.

Thanks! happy.gif
