Full Version: Freeze-up Definition Update
Lavasoft Support Forums > Archived Topics > Archives: Resolved/Inactive Topics > Resolved/Inactive General Support Issues
Rusty Bob
Been using various versions of Ad-Aware Personal for several years with absolutely no problems.
However over past month have been experiencing freeze-ups when prompted to update definitions file.
Freezes immediately after "Connect" is clicked and program has to be aborted.
Last month problem appeared to be resolved by re-installing Ad-Aware.
But when problem resurfaced in last few days, even this did not work.
(ie After intsalling a clean version of Personal SE 1.06 and initially prompted to update defintions file "500 days plus" out of date, update process freezes).
Problem does not seem to be specific to one laptop either as has occurred on both my machines.
Have tried the CLEANMGR suggestion to no avail.

Any ideas?

Hi Rusty Bob,

Try the steps in this FAQ: Ad-Aware Definition Update Problems

Please note that the reference to the URL for the Manual Update has changed to http://www.lavasoft.com/ (look at the bottom of the main page - clicking on the latest Defs SE1R143 08.01.2007 begins the download of defs.zip).

Hi

I too have had problems with updates. Last update installed OK is Jan 08 but since then application freezes when checking for updated definitions. The trouble turns out to be that the Lavasoft sites are unavailable. I have turned off Kerio Firewall and Protowall to double check but Lavasoft seems not to be there. Anyone able to help?

Hi markjuby,

Please don't turn off your firewall protection, as it could compomise your system. For Ad-Aware SE to up-date, you should only need to allow it access to the internet.

I have just checked for updated Definitions, and received the standard "Definitions are up-to-date" message.

The Definitions file that you have installed is indeed the latest one - SE1R143 08.01.2007.

Should you wish to be advised by email when a new Definition File has been released, go to Definition Updates

Select "Forum Options" in the upper-right corner (on the Topic title bar), then select "Subscribe to this forum ". In the list of options that appears, select the method of email notification that best suits you. Remember that Beta files are also announced here (eg: SE1B144 has been released today for beta testing) - unless you are part of the Beta Definition testing group, simply ignore any that have that "B" in them.

Hi Spike,

Thanks for replying. I only turned firewall off temporarily to make sure that a recent update was not blocking access to Lavasoft. It wasn't and both Firewall and Protowall are back on permanently again.

The problem was access to the entire Lavasoft site. Today I am able to access the site and obtain a response from the definition update process, albeit that it is very slow.

Thanks for your help.

Good to hear that "WebUpdate" works for you again smile.gif

It might be an idea to consider subscribing for Definition Update emails as set out above, though.

Spike
