Full Version: Scandisk after Ad-Aware scan?
Lavasoft Support Forums > Archived Topics > Archives: Resolved/Inactive Topics > Resolved/Inactive General Support Issues

i noticed, a few days ago (maybe a week ago) that most of the time, after a scan (smart scan) with Ad-Aware, when i reboot the computer, Windows XP will do a scandisk (that take around 5 minutes, i have a big hard-disk) and then reboot and go in Windows normally.

is that something new in Ad-Aware? like a new feature that when it removes a specific spyware, it tell Windows to do a scandisk after rebooting the computer.

i just find that annoying, since it takes 5-6 minutes everytime to scan the hard-disk...is that a normal/necessary process for Ad-Aware to tell Windows to do a Scandisk after a reboot?

thanks for telling me! smile.gif

Hi

No, Ad-Aware would not schedule "scan disk" to run. Scan disk will take a longtime as it checks all the blocks on a hard disk.

It could be a sign that your hard disk drive is starting to fail. Does the scan fix any errors? Could you check if the option is set in Windows to scan the disk.

Open My Computer, and then right-click the disk that keeps getting scanned at boot time.

Click Properties, and then click Tools.

Under Error-checking, click Check Now.

Are either of the boxes:

Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors

and

Automatically fix file system errors

checked?

ok, i've done a scan before closing my computer for the night. and when i woke up and turned on the computer, it didn't do a scandisk this time.

i don't think my hard-disk is failing. fitness is at 92% and performance is at 100% (using www.hddstatus.com website), i never had any problem with it. This computer is barely 1 year old

my hard-disk is a Western Digital WD2000JS (SATA2)
RaptorZX
ok here's the complete issue:

when i get this yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in it, when i click on it, it simply disappear, there's no message when i put my pointer on it.

when it does appear often, it's when i access internet (via Winamp, Explorer, etc...)

when i do a scan with Ad-Aware (smart scan option), when i click all items to clear and confirm to remove them, that triangle appear again. I then click on it again to make it disappear.

Then i do a reboot. It's there that it's doing a Scandisk before going in Windows XP, and when it finish, it reboots the computer (i guess it always do that after an "automatic before-Windows-boots Scandisk"). And i get in Windows normally, without getting this yellow triangle....for a while (a few days normally). Until i get it again and do that process again to take it off.

so maybe it's some kind of spyware doing that instead, or Ad-Aware process to scan the hard-disk after a clean-up of that particular spyware.

Hi

Please run HijackThis. Please install to a folder, not the desktop. See this thread for help on how to do this: http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showtopic=216

Then rename the Hijackthis.exe file e.g. to myhjt.exe. (Some malware target hijackthis so renaming helps get round this). Double click on the renamed file to run HijackThis and post the log from a scan.

Many thanks

Hi

Could you post a copy of a scan with Ad-Aware SE when it detects these items please. Just post the log, and skip any cleaning with Ad-Aware SE so we can try to pin-point the cause.

1) Start Ad-Aware SE
2) Click on the link "Check for updates now" press the connect button and follow the prompts to ensure you are up to date.
3) Press the start button and in the Preparing System Scan window select the option "Perform full system scan", click on "Search for negligible risk entries" so that it shows a red cross i.e. is deselected and click on "Search for low-risk threats" so that is shows green tick i.e. is selected.
4) Click the next button to start the full scan, when the scan finishes click on the show logfile button. In the log window right mouse click and select "Select all..." then right mouse click again and select "Copy to clipboard" then paste in a reply to this thread.

Hi

Could you click start, select run and the text in bold:

cmd

click ok to start a command window. At the prompt in this window type:

fsutil dirty query c:

Replace c: by the appropriate drive if it checks a drive different to c:.

Post back with the status that this command reports

Thanks
RaptorZX
it doesn't want to work, my Windows XP is in french, and it says "le volume c: n'est pas intègre" (if i translate in Google, in english it gives "volume C: is not just")

but i've found that if i remove the spywares/cookies detected by Ad-aware, the yellow triangle doesn't appear, but if i remove all the items found in "negligible objects" (MRU List items), the yellow triangle appear.

i think it would be good to say i use McAfee VirusScan 10, including SecurityCenter (will install VirusScan Plus 2007 soon)

Hi,

Thats sounds OK, in English that command will either say "Volume is dirty" or "Volume is not dirty". I guess in French n'est pas intègre is the closest translation, maybe n'est pas corrompu would make a little more sense.

Interesting observation. MRU is an abreviation for "Most Recently Used". They are not a malware risk but could be a privacy issue if you use a shared PC and others could see what files you have accessed. Most application programs will keep a MRU list so you can see a list of files recently used in the drop down list as this makes it easy for you to open recently used files. It is your choice if to remove these for potential privacy issues. Removing them should not cause an issue but in your case maybe the application does not handle it well. How many MRUs items do you normally see in a scan? Could you delete them one by one and see which one causes the yellow triangle to appear? Once you know which one you can then it to the ignore list in Ad-Aware.

i don't have opened somputer sharing the same connection around, i do have a wireless router, but it's protected (only the MAC Addresses in the router's memory is allowed to access internet, that include: my old computer, my laptop, my new computer, my Nintendo DS and my Wii).

i recently tested, after an Ad-Aware scan, rebooting the computer, it did a scandisk, and then i closed the computer for the day (after getting in Windows normally).

but i noticed, after booting the computer, it DID got into Scandisk again (without doing Ad-Aware scan), so i guess Ad-Aware is maybe not in cause. Is there a tool somewhere, where i can see if Windows is scheduled to do a Scandisk after reboot? so maybe i could counter that...
Ad Astra
Hi

It would be worth forcing Windows to run a full disk check and see if you can clear this error permanently. So when you have the time to let the scandisk run a full check please try this:

Click start, select run and enter the text in bold:

cmd

click ok to start a command window. At the prompt in this window type:

chkdsk /f /r c:

Then press the return key. It will prompt you do you want to schedule a scan at next reboot. Enter Y to confirm. Now reboot the PC, this will force a full 5-stage disk check rather than just the 3-stage check usually run. Hopefully running a 5-stage check will clear the issue for you.

Hi

As an estimate I would think it would take approx 20-30 minutes.
RaptorZX
ok, but is there a way to see if Windows XP is scheduled to do a Scandisk after a reboot?

Hi,

If you run the command described above:

fsutil dirty query c:

and it reports the French equivalent of "is dirty" then Windows will run a scandisk at reboot, however, this is most likely to be set when a shutdown did not complete correctly. Does your system shutdown and reboot cleanly?
