I have a Windows XP system and my browser keeps intermittently taking off and redirecting me to a dell/google redirect site. This seems to be legitimate and there is a "not found error." I have run the latest version of Adaware and am not getting anything. I have downloaded and run hijackthis and have a logfile. Earlier today I removed three registry entries that had google/dell in them that the program said were fishy. Things seemed to work most of the rest of the day and just started up again. I have rerun all the programs but don't see anything that looks fishy to me.

At this point I'm not sure whether or not this is a "feature" or I've been hijacked. Or, it's possible I've been hijacked through the use of a feature. It doesn't seem normal for me to be reading a web page and for it suddenly to redirect to another webpage. I've found some complaints online about this Dell/Google redirect and have located the application doing it and removed it. It was not named what the help menu said it should be. Another poster gave me the name. Hopefully, it's fixed. Why it started doing this now I don't know. Anyway, here is my logfile! The browser error redirector is what I removed:

I know that one! I saw it in person. It is made by dell. It's not outright malicious. But there is all but no info included with it except that it is from dell. There are no files in the same directory that say what it is why it is there or how to remove it normally.

There has been a serious habit in the computer manufacturer industry; they are going to put what ever software they want to on your new computer whether you like it or not. Ask for "no anti-virus, I have my own and plan to install it the moment I get the computer, and don't want the hassle of removing another anti-virus", the result: "90 day trial of mcafee internet security (2003 btw)". 7 reboots later and 70 minutes (!) worth of research/requests later to get to their clean removal tools, and you have removed the mcafee trial that you requested not to be installed at all.

Over the next 3 days you manually remove the rest of the junk (aol, etc...) that you requested not to be installed. BTW, until recently that BHO went to some dell sponsored advertisements.


Anyway, you can safely disable this program with HJT.

There's a better way to solve this:

It seems that Dell has added several new Google related programs to their new machines. One of which causes a blocked advertisement to return the user to a Google/Dell search page.

The solution is to uninstall Google AFE (older versions) via Add Remove.
Newer versions of the pre-installed Google/Dell add-ons = uninstall - Browser Address Error Redirector

If the above Google programs are not listed in Add Remove ... Go to - Internet Options | Programs | Manage Add-ons | disable CBrowserHelperObject
