Two days ago, my computer started hanging on shut down. I'll go to start menu and click shut down, and it gives me an hour glass for about 2 minutes until the shutdown/logoff/etc box comes up, then when I click shutdown it takes another 5 minutes. McAffee says it found an infected file but never finds anything. How could I determine what on earth is going on?

You mentioned McAfee. Do you have any other security programs running in the background? Many of today's products try to monitor the shutdown process and if you have two that are both trying to be the last to leave, so to speak, it can cause problems/delays.

No, only McAffee.
I had McAffee with AOL on here, and then a new update came out over the summer and AOL downloaded their own security center program. I don't know if they could be conflicting but have no idea how to find that out, since the AOL security program uses McAffee.

I'm curious about this also. I am now having the same issue and I have recently downloaded SpySweeper in addition to the AOL Security Center I already had installed. Now I'm thinking this is the problem. I'll be watching for the solution...

I decided to try shutting down SpySweeper before I shut down and sure enough my shut down went fast and smooth...must be that competitve thing "oldFrog" was talking about.
OldFrog-Is there a way to automatically have one of my programs close itself first so I don't have to remember to do itmanually each time?
