Hello. I'm having a bit of a circular problem concerning Ad-Aware's VX2 Removal Tool and my dial-up modem...

The VX2 Removal Tool discovers and successfully removes an unspecified VX2 variant from my computer, but subsequently renders my 56K modem inoperable. ("Error 692: There was a hardware failure in the modem or other connecting device.") Uninstalling and re-installing the modem via Windows Device Manager restores its functionality, but afterwards, the VX2 Removal Tool reports a VX2 variant again. Removing said variant repeats the process. It seems that my options are either a working modem or a "clean" report from the VX2 Removal Tool. Is it possible that the VX2 Removal Tool is incorrectly diagnosing my modem (or its driver) as a VX2 bug?

OS: Windows XP Home SP2
Modem: US Robotics 56k Faxmodem 5699B

Any help is greatly appreciated, and I will be happy to provide any necessary information or reports (such as a HJT logfile).

The Vx2 cleaner is obsolete and you should go ahead and delete that plugin

Use this tool instead
Look2me Removal Tool

Please let me know if the problem persists

I'm not sure how the Look2Me Removal Tool relates to VX2, but I appreciate your response.

For the record, after a little trial and error, I discovered that the VX2 Removal Tool was deleting the 3cmlink.exe file, which is necessary for some USR modems. So as it turns out, I was never infected with any VX2 variant after all.

Thank you, Jane... and Merry Christmas.
