I'm trying, very hard, to set Ad-Aware up so that it will download definition updates "silently" on restart of the computer. (Long story)

I've tried using +silent & +update in various combinations, but it does not work.

Can anyone recommend a way in which this can be done? I have a client that wants to install the software, then have it automatically, and without notification, install the latest defintions.

Help is urgently needed

Could you post back with which version of Ad-Aware you are using please? Personal, Plus or Pro as each version is different in terms of which command line options it supports.

Using Ad-Aware SE Plus

Those two options are available in Ad-Aware plus. They are modifiers so on there own would not start a scan

"c:\program files\lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Plus\Ad-Aware.exe" +silent +update

runs and just updates the definitions file. Ad-Aware starts downloads any new definitions update then closes.

"c:\program files\lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Plus\Ad-Aware.exe" /smart +silent +update

Would check for updates before running a smart scan in silent mode

Two things to check:

1) You have the correct syntax e.g. full path name, position of the quote marks. The options are outside the quotes.

2) Do you have the authenticity plug-in? If so make sure you have the latest version.

The scan runs, but the updating doesn't occur. (I'm using an old ref file so it "should" detect the newer versions on the lavasoft servers.

"c:\program files\lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Plus\Ad-Aware.exe" +silent +update works for me without any issue. Using an old definitions file it gets updated OK. Some Questions that may help find out what is wrong:

Do you use the authenticity plug-in?

Can you update OK if you use the GUI?

Last restort would be to rename defs.ref e.g. to defs.notworking. Then try the command line again and see if it downloads OK now.

Will try notworking now
