Hello... I hope someone can help me out here. Here's my problem:

Went to bed, computer was on & running fine.
Woke up, computer had log on screen and was froze, I turned the power off.
Upon restart it flashes the Windows Xp screen, displays the blue HP screen, then the black screen with the options to start in safe mode, w/networking, w/command prompt, last known good configuration or normal.
No matter what option I choose, it goes back to the blue HP screen, then back to the black screen with options.
If I choose the restart in safe mode option, it goes as far as agp440.sys then starts this whole process over again.
It will not do anything else.
I powered off and let it sit for a day and tried again and got the same exact thing.
There is no cd in the cdrom drive, no floppy disk in the A drive and nothing attached to the computer except the monitor, speakers, keyboard, mouse and printer/scanner/copier.
There was no power outage so there was no reason for it to restart in the first place.
I'm running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition.
Can anyone help me out?
I hope I'm in the right forum, I'm not sure if this is a virus or not but I figured I'd start here.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks, but that doesn't help. I don't have an XP cd, my computer came with XP so I didn't get the recovery disks. It's an HP from CompUSA.

Do you have a USB Mouse ??

Try Unplugging your Mouse if you have a USB Mouse, Plug it back in when Windows has
started then get the upgraded USB 1.1 and 2.0 drivers from the Microsoft Site.

From Another User With Same Problem:

Spent a few hours this evening trying to figure out why Windows XP wouldn't boot up on my
second disk partition. It would just get to loading the agp440.sys driver and hang. This was
completely baffling as it had been working fine and I'm sure I hadn't installed anything new
the last time I had used it. The agp440 driver is related to the video card but this is a red
herring since after this driver, it loads ACPI stuff. From reading around the 'net it looks like
this hang indicates a hardware error somewhere.

I tried getting more info by enabling boot logging but I couldn't get it working. Disabling the
agp440 driver from the Recovery Console didn't work either and confirmed that it was probably
a hardware issue.

So I started unplugging things and low and behold it booted properly after I unplugged the
mouse! Weird. It's a USB mouse so maybe there was an issue with USB? Sure enough, I
found this patch-:

-, installed it and it's working fine now.

I disconnected everything except the monitor and it's still doing the same thing. Any other ideas?

Hi, sorry it is taking so long to answer you.

I have done some searching.

Have you switched screen resolutions before this happened?

Seems that it is probably your motherboard (?) the large board which everything,
including add-on cards and memory, CPU, et. cet. are attached to. If you look in
the rear of the machine, you might find you have two monitor attachments. One
which is attached to the motherboard (on-board) and quite possibly an add-on card.

If you are using one attached to the motherboard, chances are it can be the BIOS

However it turns out, it can be a few things, unsure.gif

Please See This Site, It May Give You A Better Clue. The 1st quote below might help more than anything:

Try to change the settings in your BIOS.
Change the "PLug and Play OS" to yes. it solved my problem with the agp440.sys +win2K.

I also solved the problem!!! I upgraded the BIOS on my (brand new...)
INTEL 850MV motherboard. Now my computer boots just fine!...

==============================================================

You can try:

If you are able to install cards yourself, or maybe a friend or family member,
it might save you time and money to install an add-on card.
It would probably speed up your system too because today they come with it's own
processors and memory.

Or

You might want to look for your receipt and take it into COMPUSA if you can and have
them run through it for you.

Or

If you know the motherboard BIOS number you can try and upgrade the Flash BIOS.

If it were mine I would try the add-on card first.

I am about out of ideas, I hope I have helped.

Please let us know the outcome.
And, Thanks for your patience.
