cool.gif Hello, I joined this forum to discuss how I get around the freezing problem on my computer. Ad-aware hangs when deep scanning the registry (typelib). When I undo Spybots 1.4 Immunize, SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 restricted sites, and IE Spyad, I can scan with ad-aware 1.06r1 without it hanging or not responding as in task manager status. My problem seems to be when I have my restricted sites zone in IE7 loaded up. If I load Spybots Immunize alone, there is a short hang. If I load SpywareBlasters restricted sites alone, there is a short hang. If I load SpywareBlasters IE cookies and active x alone, there is no hang. If I load IE Spyad alone, there is a long.........hang. This leads me to believe since IE Spyad loads the most, that the more there is, the longer the hang. I realize this is not a solution but just a step toward one. I don't want to have to disable and then enable these programs to run ad-aware. All programs are up to date. My computer is free of all nasties. Windows XP Home SP2. If any administrators see this post please elaborate on my findings. I hope this helps as I am a loyal user of Ad-aware!

Hi Music Man,

Thanks for sharing your findings smile.gif

Those three all together that you found do have some overlap, so I'm not surprised if you use all 3 at the same time it might cause a lag in the scanning. I use IESPYAD so I don't use the Spybot immunize feature nor the SpywareBlaster restricted sites (those pretty much duplicate IESPYAD), though I do use the ActiveX protection in SpywareBlaster.

The same might be true if you also use a HOSTS file as those databases can be quite large sometimes.

My scans do take a little longer I've noticed when I have IESPYAD activated but the over 20,000 known bad websites it puts in the restricted zone I think is worth the extra time.

I might try to see if I can duplicate the problem using the methods you found. I don't find a problem with IESPYAD alone but haven't tried it with the other two features of SB and SWB on.

cool.gif Hello LS CalamityJane,

Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

I may reconsider and not use Spybot immunize feature and Spywareblaster restricted sites.
I knew there was an overlap with IESPYAD, but I have also read that there is no harm to use all three.

Try this: With IESPYAD loaded (without SB & SWB) start a scan with ad-aware. Then open your task manager and watch your applications status.
When the scan on my computer gets to typelib the status turns to "not responding". After a long pause the program starts running again.

This tells me that ad-aware is not scanning at all during this time. Rather it is experiencing some technical problem. It must have something to do with either the amount of information, or the information itself that IESPYAD loads into IE restricted sites zone. IESPYAD has made my web surfing much safer and I will always be thankful for such great programs. Is it possible that there is an issue with ad-aware and IE restricted sites zone?

When I uninstall IESPYAD and test again there is no problem during the scan.

I look forward to your reply.

Good morning Music Man,

When the Windows task manager is reporting an application "not responding" it does not always mean that the application has frozen. Usually, a status of Not Responding is an indicator that an application may be frozen, however, some applications may not respond to the operating system during certain process-intensive tasks. (which is what Ad-Aware is doing during this portion of the deep regsitry scan). You can see that simply waiting the 2 - 3 minutes for Ad-Aware to finish that process does not mean that it has stopped scanning, as it will appear to resume when it has finished that intensive task. A truly frozen application hang will last indefinitely and not resume it's task.

So when you add the 3mb of entries to the registry using IESPYAD, Ad-Aware is just working harder to get through that section, it has not really "hung".

I don't see a need for you to remove the IESPYAD entries while scanning with Ad-Aware. Just realize it will take a couple of extra minutes to get through the registry scan.

I hope that addresses your concerns.

cool.gif Hello, LS CalamityJane

I would like to thank you for your quick and helpful response. I am grateful that there are such forums to find out such valuable information. I am looking forward to download ad-aware 2007. If the program is anything like 1.06r1 it will rock!

Thank you so Much!

Sincerely,
Music Man

You're quite welcome! smile.gif

Hi

I'm new to this forum but I thought my similar experience with adaware freezing on deep scan of the registry "might" help. I tried all the other "remedies" but the problem still existed so in desperation I thought that it might run in Windows 98 compatibility mode.

Right click on the adaware icon and click on properties.
Then click on Compatability and tick the Run this program in windows 98 etc

Close boxes and try to run.........it may not!

Go through the same procedure again and set it back to XP

This time my Adaware ran all the way through! And still does!

Worth a try!
