In trying to download the new definitions for 8 May, Adaware SE Personal give me a popup indicating that "The downloaded files cannot be read. Please update again." I have tried repeatedly with the same result. Is there a work around for this other than download the .zip file of definitions from the web site. When I tried that, I got a message that the "Page could not be found."
GRAFX
humak1,
Clear out your cache folder ie: temporary internet folder There are some free programs that you can use that will do that for you if needed like wink.gif
CCleaner
(Note in CCleaner: go to >options > advanced > Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"). but see CCleaner Set up
Then try the WebUpDate to get Latest Definition File
(SE1R107 09.05.2006)
as the server may have been busy wink.gif
but you can
always download it manually
but if you still can not get the update please let us know.

thanks so much

I am another who has not been able to retrieve updates for 328 days. It says, "Error retreiving updates". I would also love some help here. A computer tech came over and deleted all my extra junk, but even she couldn't get it to do the update.
GRAFX
mischief,
Go to your Lavasoft folder on "C" Drive rename the defs.ref to say olddefs.ref then try the WebUpDate Feature

hie again

I renamed the defs.ref file to olddefs.ref, loaded adaware and it said "Error while loading the Ad-aware definitions file." (figured that would happen)

Then i tried to update and it got to 5% then i got a pop up saying "The downloaded definitions file could not be read, please update again"

the circle of frustration is complete lol

any other ideas?

thanks for responding btw :-)

I've been encountering this issue all day as well. I came across this thread and decided to register to let others know that they're in good company. I run Ad-Aware every single day and generally have no problems downloading updates. However, today I can't get the download and it gets stuck on 5%, and when I start the program a dialog box with a white X in a red circle pops up which reads: "Error while loading the Ad-Aware definitions file." So now not only can I not get the new update but I also can't scan my comp with the definition file I was using before I checked for the update today. I don't think there's anything wrong with my comp as nothing else has run differently, my Anti-Virus program picks up nothing and I've scanned it with Spybot to be sure. I wonder what's up?

Just a suggestion:
This may or may not work but try adding < updates.ls-servers.com > to "Trusted sites" zone if you encounter definition update troubles.....(Error retreiving updates).

Not to beat a dead horse but I too get the same result.

Just a crazy question, but why are you all registering to say you can't download updates? You can see before registering that there is a problem. By registering and then posting saying "me too", what do you hope to achieve? The problem isn't going to solve itself by reporting for the hundredth that it's not working.

I just registered with some apparently "insane" hope that someone could help me solve the very same problem. I know for a fact that there is something wrong with my computer and all I want is to have it resolved. I am hoping that by having more than one person state that there is a problem with the downloads someone, somewhere who knows something will get the idea and give us some ideas to help us solve these problems. If nobody voices their problems in these forums, who's to know there is so much trouble with the same downloading errors? With so many people expressing frustration, someone will soon take notice, right?

Um, I think the reason is so that the powers that be realize it's not an isolated or localized incident. I think everyone realizes the problem won't magically solve itself. Sheesh.

There is strength in numbers. That's why we're letting the administrators of this program aware of the problem.

I continue to have the problem even though I disabled my firewall, ran a complete scan, cleared the cache, etc. I was about to uninstall and reinstall the program until I read that this does not solve the problem.

I cannot download the updates either and am receiving the same message, "The downloaded files cannot be read. Please update again."

I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program. Big mistake! Now the definitions file, which was installed with the software, is nearly a year old.

Adware has always been extremely reliable... until now. sad.gif

First you lazilly direct people to a canned "fix" that obviously won't work because updates.ls-servers.com is down. Then you question why people are trying to bring this issue to the attention to the Ad-Aware team.

With this post I hope to achieve enlightening you to the fact that you are an xxxxxxx.

There are threads all over the place on this problem.

Hello,
When I tried to update web definitions, I got an error message stating "The downloaded definitions file could not be read, please update again." After reading a posted message from another user who was having the same issue, I downloaded CCleaner and followed the instructions that you gave another user. I still cannot get the web definitions to download.

What would help this issue of users posting that they cannot download updates would be some recognition of the facts surrounding why it is not currently available and when the expected time of resolve might be.

Now before you go deleting my account, please consider that I am only posting so that the staff here can get back in reality of volunteer support is needed and that volunteers need answers to questions posted so they do not feel like outsiders.

Sadly, I did the same thing, with the same results. I hope the folks at LS will have this issue resolved tomorrow. It certainly does not look good to anyone evaluating the platform for a proposed Enterprise purchase, to stumble upon this "issue" and unfortunate lack of solutions.

Good Luck, ALL!

Excellent point, Tom. This seems to be labeled as "Customer Service". Although in my day, it was just known as good old-fashioned courtesy.

Come on, Lavasoft folks, lets have a bit better communication on this issue, as Tom suggests.
And, an IMMEDIATE FIX!

I'm having the same problem. I was able to run Adaware Personal yesterday before the new update was released with no problem. Haven't tried to run it since getting the message that the new update was out there. Tried to download the update and received this same message.

Well, I have been really sick, still out of work, and all around bummed. sad.gif

Anyways, Sorry I haven't been round, and I may pop in from time to time here and again..

Yeah, i got this thing as well and I am pretty careful on the internet, but I think my bro got on my system. It's been having problems with network degrading and I can't get the updates from the direct link to LS. Anywho, I'll try a scan of the system with the manual update that was posted earlier, because the normal one doesn't work either... sad.gif I'll see if it catches anything new.

Nice to see y'all again!

P.S. - I had trouble finding the forums awhile back when they changed and are no longer accessible at lavasoftusa, as far as I know...

Another way to download the current defs: use the URL that is supposed to download the updates, but change the word "updates" to "www" l

It should look like this:

http://www.ls-servers.com/public/defs.zip

No guarantees but it worked fine for me.

Administrators - Had troubles yesterday myself with it hanging at 5%. I checked this morning and a pop-up box with an error message saying that there was a problem with the definitions file. I simply ignored and closed the error box and was able to proceed in downloading the 09.05.2006 updates.

Hi, R3D. It is indeed good to see you. Sorry to hear about your problems. sad.gif

You didn't have trouble finding the forums -- they were shut down over a year ago. Through the efforts of LS SteveJ and others, this site was recently brought online. Support is provided by Lavasoft Staff, not volunteers. A few of us stop by now & again to lend a hand when we can.

Take care & stop by LandzDown.com when you want to say "hi" to the old gang (including Mitch and others).

Back on topic, thanks for the update, Andreas.
