yengee
I started getting a lot of pop-ups suddenly and some times when I boot it requires a harddisk scan also. This is unusually a lot now. Even my McAfee scan stops abruptly... I came across this hijackthis forum, and followed the instructions, and attached my hijackthis log. Please help me. There is also an icon in my task bar, which pops-up a small warning on various viruses.... Please HELP me...

THanks and much appreciated.

Here is the log...

Thanks Jurgenv for your reply. I followed your instructions, and here is my latest scan logs..

Somehow, now after all this, my task bar along the Start is screwed up now. I have now 3 windows open and none of them show up in the task bar. I am not able to open Explorer by right clicking on the Start button.

Don't know what happened.

I have attached all my scan logs for your perusal. Please HELP me.

Thanks again
yengee.

* Please open hijackthis and put a check next to the following:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://store.presario.net/scripts/redirect...c02&lc=0409

* After you check the items you want to fix, close all browsers and windows, except for HijackThis, then click on the Fix Checked button on HijackThis.

* The report from smitrem is not complete... smile.gif
yengee
Thanks Jurgenv. I will run the HIjackthis this evening, when I get home. But regarding your comment about the SMITTHIS is not complete, it started, and gave a few warnings about certain rogue files and the final screen said that smitthis is going to remove the rogue files, and then the window just died. Nothing seemed to have happened after that.

I am not sure what happened there. Whatever was available in the log file, I sent to you. Do you have any suggestions on how to get this work.

Thanks and much appreciated

Nevermind, let's try something else:

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Thanks Jurgenv.

I have attached both my Hijackthis log (after deleting the said item R0) and smitfraud log.

Thanks again for your time and help.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply with a new hijackthis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Here is the log from combofix.exe...

BTW, I would like to know why we are doing all these scans with different tools. Is the infection too deep or eliminating all the possible infections. Would you please throw some light into these test. Thanks and appreciated.

Here is my log...

Looking good, how is everything working? smile.gif

Yes. I do see a difference. The pop-ups stopped. But what did we do? Do I have to keep doing any of these software scans on a regular basis? If so, what will I be looking for in the scan logs.. Would you please explain to me.

I really thank you for all the help you provided.

Thanks again

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we at Lavasoftsupport are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. tongue.gif

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. biggrin.gif
