I down loaded Ad-Aware SE it told me my definitions were 495 days old when I tried to get new defs. it got to 5% and stopped. At this time Spybot was working ok. Yesterday I finaly got Ad-Aware to update but Spybot stopped working. It gets to cool web search and hangs. I've ran CWShredder which tells me cool web search is not on my computer. Is there any conection Between Ad-Aware SE & Spybot S&D that would cause this to happen? Please be patient as I am a novice at this.

Hi Dr.Winston,

There is no incompatability with Spybot that we have heard of - they co-exist happily on millions of machines.

If you are using XP, we can try a System Restore to see if that helps at all.

Un-install Ad-aware completely. Do a Sytem Restore to a point known to be just before installing Ad-Aware.

Re-install Ad-Aware. Navigate to the default path for AAW ( C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE ) and look for files named defs.ref and defs.ref.old - rename whichever are present, by adding, for example a "-1" to the end of their name(s).

Then go here: Current Definition File (preferably using Mozilla Firefox, as there are a few incompatability issues with IE and the new Lavasoft website cool.gif )

Download the file defs.zip and unzip it to the above-named Ad-Aware address. That will give you the current definition File - SE1R125 06.10.2006. Open Ad-Aware and look at the top of the main Status page.

Then see if the two co-exist peacefully. Let us know how you get on,

Regards,

Spike

Safer Networking Forums ( Spybot Forums ) tells me that Spybot has alot of unsolved problems as testified by a number of others with my same problem. Their solutions don't work for me the same as they don't work for anyone else with this problem. Sad to say but I'll just uninstall it, as it just takes up useless space and check back ever so often to see if Spybot has got their act together yet! And at the speed that they seem to be working on it, maybe next year some time, like July.

I'm kinda a noob at all this but I can tell you that I was having the same issue with my AdAware SE while also using SpyBot Search & Destroy. The update got to 5% and then just froze up. I'm not sure why, but I tried something that eventually worked. I tried the download the first thing after restarting my computer. Sometimes, other updates, such as SpyBot S&D updates, Microsoft security updates & others behave similarly. Today even, my new Microsoft security updates would download but not install. I restart the computer, and attempt to install the updates & everything worked fine. I have no idea why it works, but if I do it first thing after starting the computer, every update goes normally. If anyone can tell me (us) why this happens, I'd love to know about it.
