I had Ad-Aware installed and kept getting an error message when the download was at about 5%, so I uninstalled the program and then re-installed it. And, I am still getting the same error message. Please help. When this program works it works so well. What causes this error to happen and how do I fix it?

I am encountering the same problem, using version 1.06r1 .
exactly the same as you say, 5% and then it stops...

I had the same failure at 5% in retrieving the update; it appears that the server is overloaded.
It took about 10 tries to get the 05.10.2006 update.

It finds the file eventually, but when you click on ok, it goes to 100% straight away which can't be right. And then it can't download the update.

Just to add to what's been posted, I'm having the same problem...notification that my definitions are 17 days old, give permission to update, update starts at 100% but eventually fails..."Updates cannot be read".

Encountered this problem once before when the update server was down.

I'm having the same problem too mad.gif And I did everything the troubleshooter said to do to try to fix it
with no avail.

Same problem here, but after 10-15 times, I got the update:

Definitions File Loaded:
Reference Number : SE1R125 05.10.2006

I am encountering the same problem, using version 1.06r1 .
exactly the same as you say, 5% and then it stops.... I deleted def refs, no references to "download.lavasoft.de.edgesuite.net"in hosts file . In fact have oldhosts file . I still am getting the 5% download and then error downloading. I added lavasoft to my allowed sites In Mcaffee Security Center. So what is the problem and how do we fix it?
Ad-Aware SE has been doing fine till today when updates could not be downloaded.

This problem has been going on now for three days. When might it be solved??

Had to go to website and downloaded definitions so that I could do scan.

Yeah, me too, but if you try and update again just to test do you go through the motions fast, as I still get error re server or update when I try again to update the def.

I was able to update 10/05 after trying and trying...however, when I hit finished, it didn't accept the new definition and went back to the 9.19.06 definition. Now when I try to update it says trouble retrieving update.
Is there a solution??? I feel so compromised!
Sincerely,
Bevy

It still didn't fix it. And I even went to the Lavasoft site and downloaded them manually
and installed them. Version 1.06r1 rejected them and went back and said I haven't updated
them for 500 days. No matter what I do I get the same message every time. It's
totally useless and hopeless. mad.gif

I have the same problem. Update stops at 5% or it goes to 100% in one second and then I get an error "could not read reference file". Tried the manual update, didn't work. The same with the "error-checklist". :/

Hi everyone,

I had the same problem the last two days that most of you are experiencing. sad.gif

However, after trying countless times, I finally managed to get through and get the update for 10-5-06. biggrin.gif

The only thing I can say is just keep trying ... trying ... trying ... trying

Good luck,

Hi:

I have tried everything to get the recent update installed, including downloading def files. Nothing works with updating def files anymore.
Mediocrates
It doesn't make any difference either way because even if you are lucky enough to manage to download the update zip file from the website directly, which is btw a complete crapshoot for the last 3+ days, if you look in the defs file you'll find that it's dated Sept 19th anyway.

Also the new and improved Lavasoft website is broken for nearly any other page that has a hook to a download as well.

Seriously screwed up. I have followed all of the recommended fixes above and it's the problem is not on my end, it's on Lavasofts end.

My wife and I run two PCs at home, both Windows XP with Norton Internet Security 2005. Both have been having exactly the same problem as the initial poster on this topic (16-day-old definitions file - update bar goes to 5% and freezes) ... to the point where I was wondering whether Lavasoft really had abandoned us -- or whether Norton had added something new to its software that was interfering with my Ad-Aware update. I tried deleting the definitions files and updating -- still no joy. Finally, I solved the issue by unistalling and reinstalling Ad-Aware, and then after two or three tries the update succeeded yesterday in downloading the 05.10.2006 file. However, when I saw that a new definitions file had come out today it took another 2 or 3 tries on both PCs to correctly download and install. So whatever the issue is, it doesn't seem to have been fully resolved yet ... Hope all's well with Lavasoft -- I've been relying on Ad-Aware for a long time, it's served me well and I've recommended it to a lot of people. But if this persists, I'll have to look elsewhere.

Everyone seems to be having trouble. For days now Lavasoft seems to have gone haywire. Lavasoft forum has been off limits to me - always "Can't find server"- only just got through now. Webupdate goes straight to 5% and sticks without saying whether new update or not. Difficult to cancel. On clicking "cancel" a message giving details of new update appears and and then goes straight to "Retrieving Update" and immediately showing 100%. Click "cancel" again and message saying can't read try again appears. Yesterday at long last i managed to manually downloaded what described itself as the most recent update which turned out to be the one I already had - the old 19.09.2006 one. I completely reinstalled AdAware with exactly the same results. Lets hope some one sorts all this out reasonably soon. It seems to be a complete mess to me.

It works for me now, did a free online virus-scan with Trend Micro House Call, it detected some malfunctions (I have Norton Antivirus, which didn't detect anything) so I did a cleanup and restarted Ad-Aware.

Downloaded the updates after that with no problems.

Hi all,

Just another quick update. I just downloaded and installed the 10-6-06 update on the first try a few minutes ago so everything seems to be back to normal again.

I also got right through when I tried to access the Lavasoft Forum page.

Regards,

I am pleased to say that the problems of the last few days do seem to be lifting for me too. I can get straight through to the forum and I have now at first attempt manually downloaded the current 06.10.2006 defs file. Adaware's Webupdate also appears to be working as it used to because it gives me the no new components message but this was only after I installed the latest update manually - I couldn't get it with Webupdate. Let's keep our fingers crossed that all is back to normal now.

Please try to download the definition file again.

We've had some issues with our network, but they have been resolved.

I wish that the problem would be limited to definitions.
When installing a new version of BidDefender from 9 to 10, the installer told me to remove Ad-Aware to continue. I ignored it and managed to complete the installation. BitDefender 10 was working fine for days and yesterday when I tried an Ad-Aware scan, it froze at 68% going no further. I had to use Task Manager to discontinue Ad-Aware.
Tried it again and the same horror story happened. Ad-Aware had a conflict several months ago with SpySweeper. I ended up removing my SpySweeper and everything went back to normal, until now.
Is Ad-Aware addressing these conflicts?

re: problems with BitDefender 9 to 10. This really isn't something we can solve from this end. As with Spysweeper causing Ad-Aware to freeze, I think for a temporary workaround, you should try temporarily disabling the realtime protection feature of BitDefender when you want to scan with Ad-Aware. Let us know if that works?

It all started to work for me when I manually downloded the file that was called EXPORT def file, and when I did a check for the update after that it moved from 5% to 100%

And now when I update I see the 5% for a second, then the usual message to say that there are NO updates available.

Please try to download the definition file again.

We've had some issues with our network, but they have been resolved.

Thank you all for your support in my update/download issue. As we speak it appears to be downloading correctly. I am glad to know that the issue was not exclusive to my computer. cool.gif

Since these issues appear to be resolved, I'll archive this topic in the "Resolved Section " (read only).
