Full Version: Summer of Malware blues

MaryLou
I have spent a sumer battling malware and my computer is still infected. Having read Calamity Jane's post about backdoor remote access trojans and rootkits, I am very concerned that I may have to reformat.

I searched for ibm to see if I have any of the classic trojans in my hjt file but did not find any, so I'm hoping my problem is not so bad. However, Explorer immediately goes to iesettings update, adfirstsolutions, finthewebsiteyouneed, and others.

My computer is a refurbished one with no separate installation disks. My software was installed on the hard drive and reformat runs from the hard drive. Could this possibly be infected also so reformating will just reinfect?

ohmigosh!

Any advice greatly appreciated. I have posted my hjt log and other files for help in analyzing problems.

I would prefer to resolve on my other computer as advised, but how can I post logs regarding the infections?

Many thanks,

MaryLou

Hi,

That's a pretty badly infected computer. Let me paste in the Hijackthis log and the Panda report for easier reading

It's not quite the worst of remote access trojans, but almost as bad in the damage it does. I couldn't copy and paste in the BitDefender report and while it found a lot there is a lot of spyware/adware remaining.

These two are most damaging due to the sheer amount of malware they download onto your computer. We can clean them off but may not be able to restore your system stability to it's previous state. You had a LOT of generic downloader trojans, probably for the purpose of downloading spyware/adware onto your PC.

Win32.Canbede Family (Look2me)
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusin...s.aspx?id=42385
QUOTE
The DLL provides backdoor functionality to a remote controller. Canbede contacts a remote server on the www.ad-w-a-r-e.com domain and may download scripts of instructions to perform. Using this backdoor, a remote attacker may:

* Monitor/Modify URLs
* Get system information
* Get Internet connection details
* Steal usernames
* Change the user's Startpage/Homepage in Internet Explorer
* Set/Retrieve registry values
* Download and execute files
* Create pop-ups
* Close/open Internet Explorer

The executable is a downloader which attempts to connect to the www.look2me.com and www.look2me2.com domains. This component uses the local file %System%\ffInst.exe and downloads Installer.exe from the remote host; executing this file. At the time of writing this file contained the latest variant of Canbede, and as such was being used to update the malware to the latest version.

DollarRevenue
http://research.sunbelt-software.com/threa...;threatid=42948
QUOTE
High risk threats are typically installed without user interaction through security exploits, and can severely compromise system security. Such threats may open illicit network connections, use polymorphic tactics to self-mutate, disable security software, modify system files, and install additional malware. These threats may also collect and transmit personally identifiable information (PII) without your consent and severely degrade the performance and stability of your computer.

Description DollarRevenue is an adware program that spawns pop-up advertising on the desktop and downloads other adware.
DollarRevenue is typically installed without consent or notice through a security exploit and is accompanied by additional adware. DollarRevenue files can contact the internet and initiate the download of so much adware that the computer may become unusable. DollarRevenue is known to have been installed from the same site as a password stealing trojan.

I'll write up some intial steps we can take for the cleanup next. I need to review the above logs for what is left.
LS CalamityJane
What programs have you run on here for initial cleaning already?

Let's start with the free tool that should take out the lion's share of DollarRevenue and the nasties it is known to bring in with it.

1. Make a copy of these instructions to have handy since some of the cleaning steps need to be done in safe mode with IE closed and no open browsers - so you won't be able to view this site during that phase.

2. Please download Brute Force Uninstaller to your desktop.
  • Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
  • Click "Next"
  • In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
  • Click "Browse"
  • Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
  • Click on "Local Disk (C:) or whatever your primary drive is
  • Click "Make New Folder"
  • Type in BFU
  • Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
3. RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcra PLUS Remover.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Do not do anything with these yet!

4. Reboot into Safe Mode
You can usually do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping F8 until a menu appears. Highlight Safe Mode and hit enter.

How to start the computer in Safe mode
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...src=sec_doc_nam

5. Once in safe mode, please go to Start > My Computer and navigate to the C:\BFU folder.
  • Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe
  • Checkmark the "Show log after script ends" box before running the program.
  • Behind the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon and select alcanshorty.bfu
  • Press Execute and let the program do it’s job. (You ought to see a progress bar if you did this correctly.)
  • Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
  • click "save"
    IN "filename" enter log.txt
  • click exit to exit the BFU program.
You'll be asked to copy the contents of the log.txt back here in your next reply. The log.txt will be in the C:\BFU\ folder

6. Reboot back into normal mode

7. Download Combofix.zip (by sUBs)
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe
Unzip it to its own folder.
Read here how to unzip/extract properly.
http://metallica.geekstogo.com/xpcompressedexplanation.html

Open the Combofix folder and doubleclick combo.exe
If you receive a popup with a Disclaimer, read that and answer Y for yes (or N for no
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.
When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt. Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

8. Now please scan with HijackThis to produce a log. Post that log into your topic along with the other requested logs named below.

Logs needed in your next post are:

log.txt will be in the C:\BFU\ folder

a fresh HijackThis log
