Full Version: Question about loading Adwatch

Hello All,
I have just purchased Adwatch Plus a few days ago and have a question.
On the options menu I see a choice between "automatic" and "active" regarding the setting "Load adwatch on Windows start-up.
When I have "Load Adwatch...." on the "auto" setting, I do not see it's icon present in the lower right of my computer screen. I would assume that the "auto" setting for loading would mean that it runs automatically.
If this is indeed true, then why do I not see the icon for Adwatch in the lower right of my screen?
When I run Adwatch on the "active" setting for "Load Adwatch...", then I do see the appropriate icon.
What do these different choices really mean? I ceratinly do not want to surf online without protection from Adwatch, however, if it will automatically be running without the icon showing, then I will just keep it on "auto" setting for loading.
Thank you, in advance, to anyone who wishes to consider this question.

Hi, teri61.

Let's see if we can clear up some of the confusion with Ad-Watch.

The Automatic & Active settings are not connected to loading Ad-Watch at startup.

Active means that you want Ad-Watch working (Ad-Watch is "loaded"). Ad-Watch will prompt you if any of the blocking options you have selected occur.

Automatic means that Ad-Watch will automatically proceed with the blocking options you selected without your intercession.

Thus, if you have "Active" unchecked, Ad-Watch will not be working.

Very Important Note -- If you elect to use "Automatic" and also select any of the Blocking Options copied below from the manual, you must remember to turn automatic off when installing software, including Microsoft Updates. Otherwise, if the software or software update you are installing attempts to make a change in any of the areas noted, Ad-Watch will block that change. This can not only mess up the softare installation, it can result in other serious problems (i.e., loss of file associations for .exe & .lnk files). Thus, with "Automatic", as stated in the manual:
QUOTE
Even if Ad-Watch is turned off and something DOES install onto your system, it will recognize it and will kill the process as soon as it has seen it when turned back on.

QUOTE
Lock Start-up sections: The start up (run) sections of the registry will be locked. No changes will be permitted

Lock Executable File Associations: Blocks (only) the most common associations (used by worms and viruses) so that they cannot stealthily change executable, shortcut, and registry file associations

Block Possible Browser Hijack Attempts
: Stops suspicious files from attaching to and taking over the browser

Block Suspicious Processes: Ad-Watch will block all suspicious processes on the system

Now, to have Ad-Watch load at startup:
  • Right-click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system stray and select "Restore Ad-Watch".
(Alternatively, launch Ad-Aware SE, click on "Ad-Watch" from the menu choices on the left.)
  • Under "Tools and Preferences", tick green, "Load Ad-Watch at Windows Startup".
In addition, to have Ad-Watch start minimized:
  • Launch Ad-Aware SE
  • Click the gear icon to access the Configuration Menu
  • Click Tweaks
  • Click Ad-Watch
  • Select "Load Ad-Watch minimized"
  • Click Proceed
Let us know if you have any further questions.
