Full Version: Another freezing issue

When trying to complete a deep scan Ad-aware freezes for me when it comes to this folder:

C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$|KB916281\SP2QFE

I have tried all the techniques listed on these forums to try and fix it. i have defragged the drive, run chkdsk, run online virus/spyware checkers, stopped the scan before it reaches the folder above, deleted internet and windows temp files, ran ad-aware from the windows command line, deselected the "Unload recognised modules during scan" option and i've ran Blacklight all with no success

The following are logs from RootKitReveal and Hijackthis - can anyone see what the problem may be?

Something is not right.

I just did a search of my system for that folder and while it is there it is empty.

I then searched Google on the KB number and from what I read that item is a cumulative update to IE on an XP system with SP1 - but you said you're running SP2.

So that makes me wonder as to how or why you installed it.

Maybe if you remove it the problem will go away.

hmm, i've just taken a look for it on microsoft's website and read the same. that folder on my computer is not empty though and i don't really want to delete it without being sure its not going to affect the comuter in some adverse way

Hi

If you previously had service pack 1 (SP1) on the system before SP2 then it would make sense for such folders to exist.

Not sure why Ad-Aware is frezzing at that point, can you start Ad-Aware, click start, then check "Use custom scanning options", click on "customize" , clixk on "Select drives and folders to scan". Click the plus signs to expand the folders, and then uncheck the folder c:\windows\$hf_mig$ and click the proceed button to save at each window, then click next to start a scan. Post back if the scan completes now and include a copy of the Ad-Aware log if it does.

Many thanks
lip
the scan runs through fine if this folder is excluded
DesertJerry
The I would deleet the contents of the folder but leave the folder itself. You have SP2 and the contents are not needed.
