I haven't updated my Ad-Aware in quite awhile. When I try it returns saying "error returning update". I have not been able to find out how to correct this. I downloaded manually the definition update. When I try to unzip it, it returns that it doesn't recognize the .def extension. Any help would be appreciated

Hi

Sounds like you may have an old version of Ad-Aware. Can you start Ad-Aware then look in the bottom right-hand corner. THere will be some text describing the version and build.

Can you post back what it says?

My version info says: Ad Adware se Professional Build 1.06r1

Hi

That is the current build of Ad-Aware SE. Can you check that you are manually downloading the correct defintions file please.

First please try renaming the definitions file in case it is corrupted in some way.

Close Ad-Aware SE, then In Windows Explorer navigate to c:\program files\lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE...

The exact name of the Ad-Aware folder varies if you are using Personal, Plus or Pro.

Then right mouse click on defs.ref, select rename and call it defs.bck.

See if Ad-Aware SE will now start, if so please try updating the definitions file using Ad-Aware SE to download a fresh and up to date definitions file.

If this fails try a manual download. Download from http://updates.ls-servers.com/public/defs.zip

Unzip this file and you will get a "defs.ref" file. This file should be copied to "c:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE.. as above folder name will depend on if you have pro, plus or free. The file in the zip file should have a .ref and not .def extension.

Please double check the file name and extension in the zip file, it should be defs.ref. Post back if this helps or not and if you can download the correct defintions file.

Many thanks

Hi again:

Thanks for the advice. I already manually replaced the old def with the new 8-15-06 file. It updated the definitions on Ad Adware, but it still gives me the same error message if I try and run webupdate? Maybe it is a problem with my Ad Adware program itself. The scan and everything else seems to be fine. Maybe if I reinstall the whole thing? Any suggestions?
Thanks! ;^)
