I used to use ad-aware with no problems, but I hadn't used it for awhile until today. It wouldn't use the autmatic update to get new definitions, so I copied the file manually and it seemed to work fine. I did the full scan, which worked properly, and identified some critical objects. I then ticked those boxes, pressed next, and it showed the progress bar for quarantining them. It gets to the end of the bar, and then that's it. Freezes, and will do nothing more. The rest of the computer isn't frozen.

Have zone alarm and macafee virus on the computer, and have tried disabling them; no other security or spyware measures.

One of the critical objects is "possible browser hijack attempt", which sounds fairly serious (is that right?) so I'd quite like to be able to get rid of it!

Is quarantining really necessary, and is there a way to turn it off, if I can't fix the problem any other way?

Is it likely to be connected to the problem of not getting the updates properly? (just get error message - "error connecting to server - try updating again later".

Windows XP home, Firefox browser, latest version of Adaware. (and I uninstalled it and re-installed it today, with no effect).

I've tried cleanmgr and other suggestions given in the other freezing topics.

It is possible to turn off quarantining but it is only recommended as a last resort. By quarantining items if something then stops working it is possible to restore your PC.

Having an up to date definitions file is important. Try the steps in this FAQ for help, use the manual download if the other suggestions fail.

Could you then post a log file from a scan with Ad-Aware SE and we can then advise on the best action.

1) Start Ad-Aware SE

2) Press the start button and in the Preparing System Scan window select the option "Perform full system scan", click on "Search for negligible risk entries" so that it shows a red cross i.e. is deselected and click on "Search for low-risk threats" so that is shows green tick i.e. is selected.

3) Click the next button to start the full scan, when the scan finishes click on the show logfile button. In the log window right mouse click and select "Select all..." then right mouse click again and select "Copy to clipboard" then paste in a reply to this thread.

The definitions file is up to date. I tried all the steps in the FAQ and can still not get it to update automatically (always says error - try updating later). But I copied the file in manually, and it was using the up to date definitions when I was having the quarantining problem.

I discovered after posting yesterday how to turn off the quarantine, so I did that and then got rid of all the critical objects (and luckily didn't have any problems owing to not quarantining them!). But I'd like to be able to use the quarantine function in the future, so would still like to get it sorted.

So I just re-ran another scan. It didn't locate any new critical objects (as it was only last night that I got rid of the others), but here is the scan-log file anyway: (I ran it this time with zone alarm and macaffee virus still turned on; I tried it with them both on and off yesterday and still got the quarantine problem whichever way I did it). If it would help, I can try it again in a day or two when I have some new spyware - I know of a game site that sometimes seems to put things on - but I like it too much to stay away from it completely!.
