Full Version: How can I find out the paths of malware objects?

Invariably, whenever I run a smart scan nothing is found, but a full scan usually turns up a few threats. Consequently, I only run full scans. The trouble is, a full scan takes about five hours to complete and my system is considerably slowed during that period. If I could only find out where the malware objects are located, then I could add those folders to "Folders to Scan" in "Scan Profile Settings," and use smart scans. My scan logs contain descriptions of removed items, but not their file paths. Also, if I expand "Threat Types" in the Ad-Aware interface, right-click on an object, click "Copy file path to clipboard" and paste into Notepad, then no data are pasted.

To clarify, if you select folders for "Scan Profile Settings," you'll need to perform Profile Scan, not Smart Scan.

I'm not sure it makes sense to scan only those folders with prior detections. Malware can be found virtually anywhere, so it's safest to do full scans.

If it takes 5 hrs, start a scan before going to bed, while you're out to dinner and a movie, or watching TV. If you use the computer while it's scanning, it takes longer. Also, I use Anniversary Edition 8.0 which has a problem with 25% CPU usage while the GUI is onscreen. I've found full scans go faster if I minimize the GUI. I'm not sure if the CPU problem has been fixed with 8.1 since there have been a few complaints.

For clipboard, you might want to check your IE settings:

Internet Options > Security Tab > Internet > Custom Level > Scripting > Allow Programmatic clipboard access

Set it to "Enable" to see if that will allow Ad-Aware to use the clipboard.

Also, you can find the detected file pathways in the Ad-Aware scan logs:

Ad-Aware 8.1 users
XP - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\Logs\Scan_<date information>.log
Vista and 7 - C:\ProgramData\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\Logs\Scan_<date information>.log

Thanks, I might have to forget smart scans, as you recommend and stick to full scans.
Regarding the IE options, "Allow Programmatic clipboard access" is not one of the three features listed in Security Settings>Scripting, which are: Active scripting, Allow paste operations via script and Scripting of Java applets. All of these are set to "enable." This might have changed in versions later than IE6, which I did not upgrade, because I use Firefox.
Regarding the scan logs, I already knew where they are located. I have uploaded a recent scan log. Please let me know if you can see any file paths for malware files in the log because I could only find descriptions.

Hi,

The log you've uploaded doesn't show any infections. I'm going to look into the copy to clipboard issue though smile.gif
