Blade81
Hi,

Have you tried to reinstall Ad-Aware?
carl235
Blade 81 - Thanks for your reply. Yes, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Ad Aware, but same thing happened. When I run Ad Aware, it detects one issue early then runs a few more minutes, then program closes and drops down to task bar with exclamation point. When I hover mouse over exclamation, a pop-up alert says there is malware. But if I try to launch the program (from the taskbar icon or start menu), it refuses to reopen. Only way to get past this is to "exit" Ad-aware, then restart, but it doesn't show any history from previous scan. So, I have no way to tell what "malware" was detected from the scan because Ad Aware won't finish the process. BTW, I am running XP SP3. I am hoping that HJT may show something. BTW, my AVG ant-virus has not detected anything amiss.

Thanks, Carl
Blade81
Ok. Let's take a closer look smile.gif

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

  • Download GMER here by clicking download exe -button and then saving it your desktop:
    • Double-click .exe that you downloaded
    • Click rootkit-tab and then scan.
    • Don't check
      Show All
      box while scanning in progress!
    • When scanning is ready, click Copy.
    • This copies log to clipboard
    • Post log in your reply.

Blade 81 - Thanks for your reply. I ran the tools as requested.

That scan didn't come with infected results either. Has Spybot detected anything?
    carl235
After reading some similar posts in the Ad-Aware 8.1 forum, I think that this may just be a bug in Ad-Aware rather than a real infection. SpyBot came up clean. I also ran F-Secure Blacklight and on-line scanner and both also clean. Finally, based on a hint from another forum post, I uninstalled Ad-Aware 8.1 and installed the previous version 8.0.8 from FileHippo. Now I run it and it completes the scan properly without closing and detects nothing serious (only tracking cookies).

Unless you have further ideas or suggestions, I believe there is some incompatibility between Ad-Aware 8.1 and my particular configuration.

    Thanks again for your help!

I suspected possible bug too. That's why wanted to know if Spybot found anything. To me your system looks to be in good condition smile.gif

You may delete those tools we used.

Blade81 - Thanks for all your advice. I will stick with 8.0.8 for a while and hope that the kinks are worked out of 8.1 before too long.

    Regards.
