I've got a client PC with a log-in problem. There's 2 user accounts that aren't passworded but after they ran Adaware updates the accounts have now got a password box to type in. When you type a p/w in it gives you an error msg saying "the system cannot log you on right now because the domain "domain/pc name" is not available".

I only know of this issue as I've had it once previously and it turned out that Adaware's updater program somehow corrupted the XP userinit.exe & or winlogon.exe file but my memory of the incident is a little vague unsure.gif

I called to their home to look at the PC and when I saw the logon issue I asked if Adaware is installed and they confirmed it so here we are. Does anyone have a quick solution or link to an old thread (maybe mine, LOL) from the archives maybe? searching hasn't thrown up much, sorry sad.gif
I'm going to poke around the HDD now via a HDD reader to see if I can access & replace files to get it up & running.

TIA

Andy

ps: it's running media centre edition so formatting it is not an option.

This really doesn't sound like an Ad-Aware problem.

This sounds like its far more likely to be a malware infection or a system corruption. I am going to ask a Volunteer Security Advisor to have a look at this for you.

I managed to run the media center restore on the PC mentioned and everything is fine now but by pure coincidence I've got a client on the way over right now with a DELL PC that's been running very slowly since the weekend. After a while on the phone and mentioning adaware updates I asked him to try & uninstall it via add/remove in XP & when he's gone in there all he sees is a red Adaware icon & nothing else at all. No text or other programs of any kind & clicking on it does nothing which means I get the job of repairing it, LOL
It's beginning to look like the latest Adaware updates are causing a problem? It's worth monitoring for now anyway. I'll report back with my update maybe tomorrow...

As for malware, the only trojan I've experienced with XP log-on issues is one that gets half way into logging on then logs back off. This issue in my experience was Adaware related with corruption of the said Windows files. I just wish I could find the old threads as I'm almost sure there was a fix?

back soon smile.gif
