Roughly 6 times over the past 3 weeks my PC has ground to a halt. The disk light stays on constantly, without blinking, which is usually a sign that some gigantic file is getting downloaded. When this happens, I pretty much lose all use of my computer for about 3 hours.

If a program is running, it slows to a crawl. But I can't stop it, either, because it can't get to the point where it accepts commands. Sometimes the program is doing timing runs, which means that I have to run the whole thing again, so I lose more than just the 3 hours of your update.

I can't use my browser or read email. If I am already in a browser, my screen becomes a jumble of overlapping empty frames with no contents. When I painstakingly manage to get into Task Manager, I see that AAWService.exe and LUCallbackProxy_3_4.exe seem to be the culprits. I assume this means that Ad-Aware is getting updated.

I tried reducing the priority of these tasks, but I get "Access Denied."

Is there any way to stop these updates, or to postpone them, or even better, to have them occur only when I initiate them?

Googled LUCallbackProxy, and it appears to be Symantec/Norton:

For Ad-Aware, go into settings and turn off automatic updates. Then you can update through the tray icon or start menu.

Of course, most software is not designed to lock up your system for 3 hrs for a mere update - usually only doing a full system scan will do that, for obvious reasons. You might be infected with a virus/bot which has gained remote access to your system and is now performing DoS attacks. If you think this is a possibility, read the instructions in my signature:

1. post a log in the HijackThis forum. Copy/paste or link to this thread to describe the problem, and somebody there can help you with malware removal.

2. submit malware to Lavasoft for analysis - this will help in future definitions and software updates smile.gif

I was aware that LUCallbackProxy is Symantec. I think it is a protection mechanism intended to protect users from malicious downloads. When a site tries to download a file, I suspect that my virus software intercepts the download, and then does it indirectly so that the file can be checked before it reaches the customer. So seeing LUCallbackProxy active might not be an indication that I am getting a Symantec download.

Yes, as I was typing my post I started to realize there probably was a setting somewhere for controlling automatic updates.

Good idea, but how can I know which files on my computer are responsible for the behavior I am seeing?

When you post in the HijackThis forum, they direct you to run diagnostic software which detects malware.
