I have installed, uninstalled, reinstalled Ad-Aware a dozen times since updating the anniversary edition free. It gets to a certain point and then keeps running but does not progress beyond whatever number of scanned files it stalled at. I have to completely stop it not using stop scan - that won't worki either. Is this the problem that norton is causing? I disabled norton completely to try to run it and that didn't work either.

Yes, that's the problem. Apparently disabling is not enough - you need to turn off Norton's Tamper Protection feature in the settings.
