Full Version: Help Needed - Ad-Aware won't run
Lavasoft Support Forums > HELP! My computer is infected! What should I do? > Help with Stubborn Infections - HijackThis Logs go here

I originally posted my problem in the Ad-Aware 2010 version forum at http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?s...mp;#entry111554.

Ad-Aware says that it failed to connect to the service. I went through the recommended fixes, and someone thought I might have a malware infection and that I should post my problem here. I created a new system restore point and made a full registry backup with ERUNT. Here is my HJT log:

Thanks for your help.

Hi, yes, there are signs of a malware infection there and that is what is blocking Ad-Aware, but HijackThis can't fix it. Let's use this free tool instead.

Download ComboFix from here:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it at least 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

That looks good smile.gif

How is your machine acting at this point and are you able to install and run Ad-Aware now?

I'll have a few minor cleanup steps to finish but I don't see any remaining signs of malware there.
jowilsonths
Hi, yes everything is going well. I was able to install and run Ad-Aware and it is currently scanning my computer.
LS CalamityJane
Hooray then, glad to hear it smile.gif

Once you are finished with that come back and follow these final cleanup steps and some prevention tips

This step will uninstall the ComboFix tool, delete any remaining quarantined files, and reset your Windows Folder options to default (to rehide operating system files, etc), since it isn't needed anymore:

Click Start, then click Run.
Enter into the command box that opens: combofix /u and then click OK.
(note that there is a space between the word combofix and the /u)

**Do a disk cleanup.
(XP) Go to Start > Run and type in the box: Cleanmgr
(Vista) Vista, Go to Start > All programs > Accessories > Run and type in the box: Cleanmgr
Wait while Windows scans your system for files to delete.
Make sure these 3 are checkmarked and press *ok* to delete them.

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Now that your PC is clean, make sure all programs are running properly and then you'll need to reset your restore point in Windows XP.......why?

One of the best features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after malware removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
Go to Start and right-click on *My Computer*.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Put a Checkmark in the box next to "Turn off System Restore".
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
Go to Start and right-click on *My Computer*.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the checkmark next to "Turn off System Restore".
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Also, I can't stress enough the importance of having your Windows critical Security Updates. Most malware today uses exploits on unpatched systems to creep onto your system without your even doing anything but visiting an infected webpage!!
Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. This is the first step in malware prevention, as many nasties now take advantage of new exploits and if not patched, you are vulnerable!
Windows Update
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/

Watch what you download, be careful where you surf, and don't trust attachments or even links in email and Instant messages. Even if they come from a buddy, that buddy could be the one infected and it is the virus sending that link from his account. You click on it thinking he is trusted, and *boom* you're infected.
Many "Phishing" attempts are made by cleverly crafted email to look like it is coming from an "official" source (like Microsoft, or your bank, or some other provider). Don't click on links in those. Go directly to the site instead and navigate the menus - don't trust email you think came from a "safe source" unless you are expecting it! There is more in the link I will provide below, but those are the choice avenues of infection these days.
Stay far AWAY from cracks and warez sites - you're sure to get infected files there, and the same can be said for files downloaded from p2p (more than half are usually infected and probably not detectable by your current security software - the newest nasties are always released in those venues).

A word about shared computers and networks.
Share Your PC
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/s...hare/intro.mspx
Not all users need to have Admin Accounts. It is much safer to have most of your users on a shared system running as Limited User accounts. That way, if there is "an accident", it will only affect one user's account and not the entire system.

I also highly recommend to get the free tool, Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) from Microsoft to analyze your PC security for prevention purposes.

MBSA Version 2.1 will scan for common system misconfigurations on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems. This program will identify the system security weaknesses in your browser and operating system and provides easy instructions to correct them. This includes any missing critical Windows security updates, system vulnerabilities and your IE Browser security settings. Get the download here:
Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...s/mbsahome.mspx
Choose MBSAsetup-EN.msi = (English Version) or the language appropriate for you.
jowilsonths
Ok so Ad-Aware finished the scan, I uninstalled combofix, and ran disk cleanup. I also reset the restore points. I then went to Microsoft update and it said that it was unable to install the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130). I've tried this a few times and it is still unable to install. I downloaded the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer and it said I was at severe risk because security updates were not installed. How can I fix this problem of not being able to download the update? Again, thanks for your help.
LS CalamityJane
Oh dear, that is a problem with some malware infections these days. They will make changes to the Windows registry to stop security sites and security software from running AND to disable the ability to update your Windows with security updates. Assuming this is a genuine Windows version of XP, and you were able to get updates before, you really need to get that fixed as I see you also have a really old verison of IE that is vulnerable to exploit (we are now on IE 8 which is much more secure than IE 6). So IE also needs updating as well as your operating system.

Here is a Microsoft helpline number that should be able to direct you on what you need to do. This is a free service and toll-free call

1-866-PCSAFETY
or
1-866-727-2338
This phone number is for virus and other security-related support. It is available 24 hours a day for the U.S. and Canada.

For support outside the United States and Canada, please contact your Microsoft Help and Support worldwide. Go to this page and choose your region from the box:
http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

DO tell them your PC had a serious malware infection, and although it has been removed you are now unable to get your windows updates and the details of the installation failure you described above.
jowilsonths
Update: I called PC Safety and they seemed only concerned with me downloading the updates and not fixing the actual problem, but hopefully this will work just as good. I was able to update my computer with all the available downloads by actually downloading the files from microsoft instead of through microsoft update. I then scanned my computer with MBSA and everything looked good after I made a few changes to some settings. If it is ok, I ran HJT again and wanted to make sure I don't have anything left of the malware. Thanks for the help

QUOTE(jowilsonths @ Oct 21 2009, 02:45 PM) *
Update: I called PC Safety and they seemed only concerned with me downloading the updates and not fixing the actual problem, but hopefully this will work just as good. I was able to update my computer with all the available downloads by actually downloading the files from microsoft instead of through microsoft update. I then scanned my computer with MBSA and everything looked good after I made a few changes to some settings. If it is ok, I ran HJT again and wanted to make sure I don't have anything left of the malware. Thanks for the help
