I have AdAware SE personal edition running on Windows 98. Worked great for a long time. Now my definition files are long out of date and when I try to update definitions I get "ERROR RETRIEVING UPDATES" with no explaination of why or what to do about it. What do I need to do to download updates?

SE is no longer supported - definition updates ended 6 months ago in March. Rather than update to AE now, I'd wait a week for the new version coming out Oct 13. Only problem is that it may not work with Win 98 - it's not a supported OS.
