This has probably been asked before, but I just joined today . . . can I set scheduled scans in the free edition of LavaSoft Adware Plus?

Ummm... I think you've got a bit mixed up.
"Ad-Aware AE Plus" is not free - you have to pay for it - and yes with that version you can set schedules for scans.
"Ad-Aware AE Free" is free but with that version you cannot use the scheduler.
