The thing is, and this goes for any type of software, a lot of the different products available on the market basically offer the same stuff - just with minor differences here and there.
This is true for pretty much all security software.
So then you read other people's comments on which they prefer or why they don't like one compared with another. But often the comments you are reading;
- don't apply to the most current version of the product - this can be quite hard to spot, unless you know the product versions well
- are written by someone, especially bad comments obviously, who has had problems with the product. Now the problems they experience, if they had posted here for example, could probably have been easily fixed.
- written by somebody who already favours a particular product.
Don't get me wrong this isn't always true, you do get some well written and balanced reviews.
So in my opinion, and I think the general concensus, is that try the products (especially free ones). See which you like. Then maybe if you like one, keep it, or upgrade to the full program (so the pro/plus versions in Ad-Aware's case). Also remember that no product alone will catch all threats; so have a couple of security programs installed (just only have one real-time agent turned on).
Obviously, I use Ad-Aware and help out here in the forums - so I must like it. But, of course, there will be others who prefer to use different programs.
Hope that helps,
Casey
