Full Version: Problems installing/uninstalling Ad-Aware on XP64 and 2000

I've been running AAW on Windows XP64 for a while without a problem.

I started having some boot problems with services.exe using all CPU and memory and I need to deactivate startup apps to see if I can figure out which may be causing the problem.

AAW behaves erratically: it starts in the tray even though it's not in the startup apps and even though I disables the service.

So I decided to remove it and see what happens.

But I can't!!!! Each time I try to remove it from within the Control Panel|Add\Remove Programs it prompts me to INSTALL it instead of removing it.

Please advise.

Thanks.

Hi,

Could you navigate to your program files folder and see what, if anything, is contained with the Lavasoft folder?

as far as i could tell all the files installed were there.

i deleted the whole shabang manually, then searched for every Lavasoft item on the disk and in the registry and deleted all of them too.

awful. an experience like this is all it takes to ban that software for life from my systems.

I completely understand - it's a pain when programs don't behave as they should.

If you should decide to reinstall AE - then the original problem is because the icon you see in the tray is due to the executable AAWTray.exe not actually the Ad-Aware GUI. Should you wish to remove it, you can deselect that option from within Ad-Aware's settings.

Yes, I was aware of the AAWTray program. but it I killed it from startup and it still loaded.

when a program does not behave as it should, at the very least it should uninstall properly. but in this case there was no way to uninstall it and it was so scattered across the system that it was an extreme pain to do it manually.

awful stuff.

While trying to install AE in Windows 2000 I got the 2343 error.

So I followed the instructions and customized the install, then installed Ad-Watch manually.
At that point I got a greyed out icon in the tray.

I rebooted the system and the tray app did not load. So I loaded it manually. It loaded in the
tray with an exclamation mark and prompted to reboot to complete the install.
I rebooted and it again did not load.

Pls advise.
