Full Version: Tray Icon & correct .exe files not loading

Hello,

I've been a long time Ad-Aware user. I just got a new laptop running Windows Vista (which I am very new to). I have tried multiple times to download and install Ad-Aware onto my new laptop. I am able to install it - or so it seems...

However, I cannot get the tray icon to display. I read many threads regarding this topic, but I haven't seen one with my particular issue:

When I run Ad-Aware and have the GUI up, the only applicable application process in the task manager is Ad-Aware.exe - no aawservice.exe or aawtray.exe

Also, when I close to GUI, I no longer have any ad-aware processes running in my task manager.

Ideas?

(Before posting this, I added an exception to Windows Firewall to allow Ad-Aware to work with it. And that doesn't seem to have fixed anything - unless I need to do another restart?)

I am running Symantec Endpoint Protection. Everything is somewhat set-up just like my previous laptop (though that was XP). I don't understand what is going on....

THanks in advance!

Since I know that you have already checked for AAWTray, then I will ask you to double check the settings in the program to make sure you have the following ticked:

"Show notification area icon"

If you don't, then please tick. If you do already then:
  • Navigate to: C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware
  • Right click on AAWTray
  • Click create shortcut
  • Drag and drop this shortcut into you start menu folder named Startup

This should ensure that AAWTray loads everytime.

You won't be able to see aawservice in the processes tab. Click on the services tab and then look for Lavasoft Ad-Aware service. If it is not there then let me know!

Have you tried running a scan yet with Ad-Aware? If not and when you do, you run into problems ensure that you disable Symantec's anti-tamper protection agent. We have had a lot of reports that this is causing Ad-Aware scans to stall.

Hi Casey,

Thank you so much for the help!

I was able to run a quick scan just fine last night (but thanks for the pro-active tip!).

I right-clicked the aawtray file and selected "pin to start menu" (I think that's what it said). The tray showed up. To test, I shut down and re-started Ad-Aware, and the try popped up! smile.gif

I also noted that Lavasoft is listed in the "services" tab. I guess this is one of the things I need to get used to with Vista (until the 7 upgrade - lol!). It does note Lavasoft as "running" even when the GUI is not up on the screen. So it looks like I'm all good!

Thanks again for all the help!

I found the start folder but there was no "startup" folder within the Start folder... I just added it to the start folder.

update: I then restarted my computer and it's not showing...

Lavasoft is showing as "running" in the services tab of the task manager - I assume this means it is monitoring my computer (my main concern). I like having the tray icon there just as reassurance that Ad-Aware is monitoring my computer, but I suppose it isn't necessary. However, adding it to the Start folder doesn't work (again, I didn't see a "startup" folder).

Thanks again!

Yup the service indeed should be running at all times - so it is good that it is doing so smile.gif

If you click start > all programs > then you should see a folder saying Startup?

No problems. Is everything running as it should now?
