Full Version: can't change profile
Lavasoft Support Forums > Archived Topics > Archives: Resolved/Inactive Topics > AAW Anniversary Edition - Resolved/Inactive
jobo23
Hello everybody.
When I go into "settings" and try to change profiles, it shows "default profile" in purple on the left, with the "+" and "x" below it grayed out. So I can't change profiles. And when I go into "select folders" I can change that all I want to, but it doesn't affect the actual scans. It always scans all my local drives, but won't scan my USB Seagate. I'm using the free edition and the manual says these things are included.
Thanks for any info.

When I go into "settings" and try to change profiles, it shows "default profile" in purple on the left, with the "+" and "x" below it grayed out. So I can't change profiles.

So clicking on the + or x does nothing?
+ add profile - clicking on this should bring a pop up asking to name the new profile.
x delete profile - clicking on this should bring a popup saying you can't delete the default profile.

When you say you can't change profiles, you mean you can't add one?
i.e. you can't change profiles if only the default exists. After adding a profile, you change by clicking on the profile name (selected profile = purple) - so the + and x keys are not used to change between profiles.

If the + and x buttons don't work, something is wrong, and it might help to know which version you're running (8.0.x). You might need to update or reinstall.
jobo23
Right, the + and x buttons don't work. I'm using 8.0.7.
I did an update 2 days ago; I assume that downloads both definitions and program updates. Is that correct? I didn't see another way to update just the program.

Any thoughts on why I can't scan my USB drive?

Thanks

Well, I uninstalled and reinstalled AE, so I'm back to version 8.0.0, and the + and x still don't work. Plus I have a new problem: Down in the tray, there is an icon that says something like "restart your computer to make AdWatch Live work." But when I restart the computer, that icon is still there saying to restart the computer.

Yes, both the program and definitions are updated. You can manually download definition updates, but there's no way to update only the software. However, 8.0.7 has been out since June 29, so any updates or installations since then have been merely definitions. Since the + and x buttons don't work, it sounds like a bad install or corrupt file, which is probably why changing the default profile doesn't work.

I'd try a clean uninstall first. You can do this yourself if you're experienced with finding/deleting folders, files, and registry entries; or you can use programs like these useful free tools. WICU cleans up botched installs and Revo Uninstaller on the highest setting will remove all traces of Lavasoft/Ad-Aware before you reinstall. Also, I find it best to stop all running processes before installing any software.

Download a fresh copy of the installer from here: http://www.lavasoft.com/single/mirror_down...php?f=g2Obc772A

If you can wait a little while, there's supposed to be a new Free version released this month which includes anti-virus currently only available with Plus and Pro. Some Anniversary Edition bugs were worked out during beta-testing which might resolve your problem if it's a bug and not a bad install/corrupt file.

Did you use the old installer, possibly corrupt, or a fresh download?
Go to Settings/Ad-Watch and make sure the module(s) are selected before closing/restarting.
Go to Control Panel/Admin Tools/Services and make sure "Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service" is Started/Automatic.
Go to Task Manager/Processes and make sure AAWService.exe and AAWTray.exe are running.

Have read this thread and can back up what Jobo23 says about the profile
buttons in Anniversary free edition.

Whilst I have never had need to change or add profile the + and x buttons
in my programme have always been greyed out and certainly don't show any
instructions when clicked on.

Always assumed not part of the free version and only worked in paid for versions.

Maybe someone can enlighten us all about this matter??

Cheers
ZENFLASH

P.S. All updates offered to me always downloaded so my version is latest available.

Thanks for the input ZENFLASH - the comparison chart shows profile scans as a feature of Free, but I guess either it's incorrect or a bug. Something tells me it must be tied to either anti-virus or scheduler not included with Free.

Jobo23, for now, disregard my comments about corrupt file/bad install. Surprisingly, I can't find any other threads on this problem, so maybe everyone has assumed it's not included in Free. I'll report this as a bug, but I doubt anything will be done since the new version is due out this month. If profile scan is tied to anti-virus, the bug may not carry over since the new version will have anti-virus available with Free.

Okay. Any idea why AAW doesn't scan my USB drive when it's doing all the rest of them?
visitor
Well if Profile Scan is non-functional, the default profile can't be changed away from C:

Go to Settings/Scanning/Miscellaneous, select "Add Ad-Aware to Windows right-click menu", click OK.

Then open My Computer, right-click the USB drive, and select "Scan with Ad-Aware."
If this works, after the scan, in the Ad-aware screen under the Scan System Radar it should say "Last Scan Mode: Context Menu Scan."

Even though the default profile shows only C:, AAW scans all my drives (C:,D:,G:,J:...etc). All but the USB. I'll try your suggestion and get back to you.
Thanks

Okay, the right-click works, in the sense that it brings up AAW, and it says, "Last Scan Mode: Context Menu Scan." But it takes less than a second to do that, and there's no way it could scan the drive that fast; it's big.
Edit: Tried the right-click thing on my other drives, and it does the same thing: It doesn't really scan them.

Check the scan settings. Default is to skip files over 20mb. Also make sure the box "executable files only" is not checked. I don't have an external HD, but I scanned my external CD and it worked correctly. After you scan, export the log file to your desktop and look it over to see what was scanned and how many items.

I unchecked the "skip files larger than" box. "Executable files only" is not checked.

0 items scanned, even with my C: drive. It obviously doesn't work with the right-click menu, even though it says, " Scan and cleaning complete: Finished correctly after 0 seconds".

To answer the profile scans, visitor posted to Lavasoft about it and their response was that the Free users cannot create new profiles (this is for plus/pro users only) - they can just edit the default one to suit their needs. This is explained in the help manual.

@jobo23, I'm not sure why your context menu scans don't appear to be scanning any files. If you go into your C: drive and try scanning a folder in there - say your Windows folder, does that work?

Actually, I can't edit the default one either. When I use the "select folders" button to change the profile (I assume that's how it's done) AAW ignores what I do there and continues to perform scans the way it always has: all the local drives. Even if I use the "select folders" to delete everything, a regular scan still scans everything except the USB.

Ah, yes! That works. It won't scan the whole drive, but it will scan individual folders. So now I can work with that to scan folders on my USB drive. Any idea why it won't scan the whole USB drive when I do a regular scan? When I do a regular scan, it scans all my local drives except the USB drive.

Thanks

Ok, hold on. Just to double check. You say here if you use the 'select folders' option in a profile scan then a regular scan will still scan everything? Well it should! You need to run a profile scan for your options to be used.

Or is this what you meant?

Right, so the context menu scan won't scan the drive itself but will scan the folders. Hmmm... I can't verify that right now since I'm using the beta version of the new Ad-Aware (due for release soon) but I will try do so at some point or maybe see if visitor can.

No, sorry. When I say regular scan, I mean "not the context menu scan." When I run a scan from the AAW console, regardless whether I choose Full Scan or Profile Scan, it does the same thing: It scans all my drives except the USB. I used the "select folders" option to delete everything from the profile and a Profile Scan still scans everything. If I change the profile from C: to D:, it still starts with the C: and scans all my drives. Or if I choose just a certain folder within the C: drive, it still starts at the same place as if I hadn't selected anything. So it's like it ignores what I select for the profile.

LOL, I should have asked this first since I made that mistake and started a thread here. I mistakenly kept clicking Full Scan instead of Profile Scan and was wondering why it scanned all drives.

The only thing is I can't perfectly replicate the environment. I don't have an external HD, but scanning my external CD worked with both profile and context menu scans. Also, I'm using AE 8.0.3 and since it works, I'm wary of updating to 8.0.7.

In case it matters, what all have you selected under scan settings? I have everything checked:

File Scanning
- Rootkits
- Spyware Heuristics
- Archives
- Skip files larger than 20480 KB

Sections to Scan
- everything except "Close browsers when deleting cookies."
