I have used Ad-Aware free version for years with no trouble. Just recently both of my Vista machines get from 3000 to 4500 objects scaned and then quite recording. They still act like they are working, but it reality they are doing nothing at all. THe Windows XP machine still works, but both Vistas are affected. Anybody have any answers. I have disable Nortons, and SpySweeper. I have used all three products for many years with no issues, so I cannot believe it is one of those. I have aldo uninstall cleaend up with REVO and re-installed to no avail. This seem to start occuring about 4 deffinition files ago. Thanks in advance Floyd

Hi,
It's probably Norton. You need to disable the anti-tamper function - which is not disabled by just disabling Norton. Do that and see if the scan completes.

Just wanted to add my thoughts ... I have the same problem and it started recently (within the last couple of weeks). It stops running at about 3200 to 3400 objects and it shows stopped at a different file each time ... none of which have anything to do with Norton. By the way, it happens at roughly 18 to 19 seconds running time.
I am aware of the notice posted about Norton but it stops on random files (never the same one twice) and never a Norton file or Directory/Folder.
I also have used all these programs for years and never had trouble ... though I do have to day that this Ann Edition seems to be a lot more unstable than the predecessors.
Anyway, hope that helps ...

Floydeby mentioned Norton on his system, so in this case, it probably is the culprit. There's other software which reacts to Ad-aware scans too, what other security software do you run?

I am having the exact problem. It hangs up and will not close.
I do use Norton, but have had it and the Ad-Aware for months. I have no other security software
at this time. This just started a few weeks ago.

Exactly. Having Norton and Ad-aware for months prior to the problem is meaningless unless you haven't updated. One user states:

The problem has only occured on my computer since Norton 360 updated to version 3.5.2.10
It would be much more helpful if Norton users would try turning off the tamper protection and post whether or not it worked, rather than just point out they have the same problem. All these posts and only 1 person has even bothered to mention which version of Norton. *face palm*

I turned off the tamper protection on the Norton 2009 I have and Ad-Aware Anniversary scanned fine on a quick scan & a full scan.

I have the same problem but I use McAfee, not Norton. I don't have Norton on my computer at all. How do I fix this? I've used this program for years with no problems.

Have you tried to disable McAfee or run a short smart scan?

It stops whether I do a Smart or Full scan. Does disabling actually help? I want to know before I mess around with this.

It might, the only way is to try it. Conflicts are why most people recommend only running 1 real-time protection program, and Symantec and Norton are examples of this. It wouldn't surprise me if McAfee started having problems due to an update - it seems these companies only cooperate after a problem arises.

I'm not going to disable my virus scanner on a "It might help." Either it
will
help, or it won't. I'm not putting my computer at risk for a "maybe" problem fixer.

Your computer's not at risk if you temporarily disconnect from the internet and disable AV. If it allows Ad-aware to scan, great, afterwards you can enable AV again. But as Casey said, you can talk to Lavasoft directly as a paid user.

I to turned off tamper protection and all is fine. I wish there was a permanent solution.

Once I found tamper protection in the norton misc setting and turned it off it is working just fine. Norton must have just recently added this. I do not know about McAfee but they probably have a similar setting that can be turned off and should work ok.

So we're blaming this on Norton? Other spyware/adware/malware scanners are not affected by this and yet it is Norton's fault. Really? How many times in the past has Lavasoft had "glitches" in their software after an defintions update and everybody waited around, sometimes for months, for a fix.
Telling people to disable or change their AntiVirus settings to workaround a "glitch" is not an acceptable solution to me.
Time to move on to other "free" apps.
Just a FYI (may help):
2 home PC's - Vista 32-bit systems (scan freezes)
1 Laptop - Vista 64-bit system (scan does not freeze)

http://lavasoft.com/mylavasoft/support/blo...are-scan-freezeAd-Aware Scan Freeze
by John on September 17th, 2009.
The scan freeze issue you are experiencing could be caused by a recent update to Norton, we are currently working with Norton to resolve this issue.
Until this is resolved, please try the following before scanning with Ad-Aware:
Go into Settings in Norton and turn off the Norton Product Tamper Protection.
Ad-Aware should now be able to complete the scan.
