After a update, AdAware Anniversary Edition closes. I would like to do a scan immediately after the update but have to open the program again to do the scan. Is this normal or is there a fix?

Yes, this is normal. I update my definitions manually, but need to close/reopen AE to load the new definitions. Casey_boy has brought this to Lavasoft's attention - if they chose to fix it, it will probably be included in a big update scheduled later this month.
