Hello,

I have used Adware free edition for many years now this is currently the 4th computer that I have installed this software with. Up until about 6 months ago everything has been great.

Here is what is going on. About 6 months ago (could have been longer) after updating my 2008 free edition I noticed that my computer (windows xp) was taking much longer to start (about 2 minutes). I though maybe I had caught a virus my avg scan however turned up nothing. I tried scanning with the Adware program and it crashed, I tried to update the Adware program and it also crashed.
I then attempted to download the new anniversary edition, everything was fine until the program installer tried to uninstall the 2008 program. An error popped up stating that "I do not have permission to remove this program" and the install was automatically canceled.

I have also tried to reinstall the 2008 program with the same result. I attempted to uninstall via the control panel and also by using a purchased registry cleaner. I always get the same message "do not have permission to remove this program" or something to that effect. At that point the uninstall for this program is either reversed or my computer will crash all together.

I am really hoping that I can find some help here my computer is not taking as long as 10 minutes to start up and I am convinced this is the reason.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Brian

Hi,

Try using Revo on its highest setting - it's very good at removing programs when the in-built installer fails.

thank you for your response. I just tried that program about half way through the uninstall is unsuccesfull and I receive the following message:

Error: 1921
Service "Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service" (aawservice) could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to stop system services.

Any idea what this means?

Yup for some reason the service which Ad-Aware uses is not stopping so the uninstall can't complete.

Firstly I would like you to make sure you are logged on as an administrator, then:
  • Start > Run > type services.msc > enter
  • try and find Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service
  • check its status by right clicking on the service and clicking properties

Is it running?

If so, then try and stop it.

If this is succesful try uninstalling through the Windows Add/Remove or the installer or Revo.

Just to add some detail to the process after clicking on 'Properties'

Go to the Recovery tab - you are likely to discover that Ad-Aware is set up to restart automatically. Change the settings in all three boxes. Also change the box in the main Properties window to prevent it starting 'automatically'.

Then you can close aaservice from Task manager and uninstall from the Start Menu.
