LS CalamityJane
Hi Mehdi,

There are signs in the hijackthis log of an infection and possibly may have a rootkit involved, which means your present security programs are probably not able to deal with them because they are being blocked. Lets try manual removal with the following free 3rd party tool.

For those casually looking on, this tool isn't for everyday use by just anybody and is only meant to be run under supervised use and when called for by a helper trained in it's use by the author of the tool.

Download ComboFix from this location:

ComboFix

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware. The tool may initiate a restart, if so, please allow it to do so and it will continue to scan.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it at least 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.
Mehdi Hasan
when i run the combofix after it installs the microsoft recovery and says we will begin scanning your system a blue error screen comes for a second and my computer restarts. I tried this 3 times.
LS CalamityJane
Ok, you may have a variant of malware that is blocking ComboFix from running. So we are going to uninstall the present one you have and re-download and rename the tool to see if that will work.

Do these steps next:

1. Uninstall combofix:
Click Start, then click Run.
Enter into the command box that opens: combofix /u and then click OK. (Note that there is a space between combofix and the /u )

2. Redownload and save with a different name as follows

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

Choose to *Save* the file as you see in the image below

That will open a small popup Window and in the field that says *file name*, insert a hyphen between the words "Combo" and "Fix" so that file name will now read: Combo-Fix.exe (see image below)

Then choose to *save* (save it to your desktop). Then see if it will run. Let me know how you make out
Mehdi Hasan
it still does the same thing what should i try now?
LS CalamityJane
I'm going to call in some cavalry whose knowledge on this problem may be better than mine. Just hang tight while I get another helper in here to lend a hand.
SpySentinel
Hi,

Please download Win32kDiag.exe by AD to the desktop. Double click on it. It will make a diagnostic and produce a report on the desktop. Post that report on your next reply:

Step #1

1. Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK.

2. Then copy and paste the content of the following codebox into Notepad:

Exit

3. Save the file as "fixes.bat". Make sure to save it with the quotation marks.

4. Double click fixes.bat.

Step #2

We need to execute an Avenger2 script
Note to users reading this topic! This script was created specificly for the particular infection on this specific machine! If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.
  1. Please download The Avenger2 by SwanDog46.
  2. Unzip avenger.exe to your desktop.
  3. Copy the text in the following codebox by selecting all of it, and pressing (<Control> + C) or by right clicking and selecting "Copy"
    CODE

  6. Paste the script into the textbox that appears, using (<Control> + V) or by right clicking and choosing "Paste".
  7. Press the "Execute" button.
  8. You will be presented with 2 confirmation prompts. Select yes on each. Your system will reboot.
Note: It is possible that Avenger will reboot your system TWICE.
  9. Upon reboot, a command prompt window will appear on your screen for a few seconds, and then Avenger's log will open. Please paste that log here in your next post.

Step #3

Now try running ComboFix, then post the log here.
