Hi I've been using the free version of Ad-Aware for about a month now and have generally been quite happy with it (I haven't had any of the common problems in the FAQ's) but ever since downloading it I haven't been able to do a full scan as Ad-Aware hangs trying to scan one file for ages (it's a different file everytime). I left it an hour the first time to see if it would rectify itself but when it didn't I went to stop the scan and restart the program but the entire computer had frozen causing me to have to manually shutdown (aka press the power button until the D*mn thing responded).

I didn't really think too much of it as the 'quick scan' was working well enough for me but now it's starting doing it with the quick scan too so I have no way of scanning the computer at all.

Is there any reason it would be doing this?

I'm running Windows Vista (sadly) and I also have Norton (yet even sadder... the laptop was bought for me so I had no choice in the matter :s lol). Is it possible that I have a virus that is halting the scan somehow? It honestly wouldn't surprise me...

Thanks.

Steph.

Hi,

Can you please post your scan logs here. Could you also try disabling Norton temporarily while you run the scan.

Thanks,

Hmmm well, I uninstalled the product and reinstalled to see if it had been corrupted somehow (so I can't post my scan logs) but I was still having the problem so I disabled Norton and downloaded avast! and no viruses were found and also Ad-Aware is now scanning fine. It still sticks a bit but other than that it seems okay. I haven't tried a full scan yet though.

So I can only assume that Norton was preventing the scan for some reason (which I can't understand as the quick scan is not set to scan the Anti Virus software... but who knows... Norton was probably having a bad hairday... lol).

I did wonder if it was something to do with the processor usage as Norton uses alot of it doing stupid background tasks like "Idle Scans". Perhaps when I was trying to use Ad-Aware, Norton classified the computer as "In-Active" and started to do an idle scan or something similar which caused the computer to freeze as it was doing too many tasks?? I'm not very well versed in computers but could this be the main problem? I do know that Vista and Norton combined use up a fair amount of processor between them so would it make sense that combining Ad-Aware to that equation could be causing the computer to crash..?

Thanks for your reply though. I'll post again if I have problems with the full scan.

I have now ran a full scan and can confirm that it is working fine biggrin.gif Happy Days!

From what I can tell it was Norton causing the problem. I am now running avast! and it seems perfectly happy working alongside Ad-Aware.

I'd advise any other Norton users to either disable Norton before scanning or just download a decent anti-virus program smile.gif It worked for me and my laptop is running alot smoother for it as well.

Hi,

Thank you for telling us how you got on. We have had trouble with Norton and compatability issues - there are a few ongoing topics about it at the moment.

Since this issue appears to be resolved I'll close the topic. If you need it reopening then PM myself or any moderator.
