Main GUI causes CPU temp to spike beyond ANY concievable limits like a binging crack ######. mad.gif

There are only a couple of applications that stress my CPU to the max:

OPTIMIZED BOINC applications, e.g., SETI@Home ap_5.00r103_SSE.exe, ap_5.03r112_SSE.exe and AK_v8_win_SSE_P3.exe

Given that the aforementioned apps are OPTIMIZED for processing efficiency for specific CPU implemented SSE, the admonishment is to be carefull of overclocking. As long as my slot 1 PIII 1000 @ FSB + 10% operates below case temp (as measured by Asus PC Probe v2.12.07) 32 Deg. C., my system stability is acceptable. However, I have NEVER seen the wacked CPU temps that display when the most current version of AW AE (8.07.04) GUI is active.

The only plausible explanation I can think of is that there's some code in the GUI that's making inappropriate hardware system calls. I've seen that with respect to an earlier version of Asus PC Probe (v2.11.x). HOWEVER, in that case the voltage monitor was also spiking all over the place. In the present case, i.e. with AW AE 8.07.04, voltage traces on ALL rails remain mirror smooth.

I speculate if this perhaps could be an issue regarding SSE version.

I know you say the GUI but does this occurs when the GUI is just open, or when a scan is running?

LS_Calamity Jane is looking into the GUI CPU usage:

http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showtopic=26297

When I open the GUI, I get an initial spike of ~96%, followed by a secondary spike of ~74%. Then it stabilizes at 25%. However, I just noticed if I minimize the GUI, it drops down to 0%. I'm guessing the initial spikes are caused by the GUI interacting with the service and the GUI maximize/minimize difference is because the skin .eGL files are all ~4mb.

The radical CPU spikes occur with just with the GUI open With SETI I see spikes of about 10 C. Deg. (which is pretty intense in its own right), but they're rather short lived (temp trace looks like a saw-tooth with a lot of minor spikes inside of the larger ones), but with the AW GUI open temps are spiking 30 C. Deg.s and it holding for several seconds at a time (even with the CPU fan screaming like a banshee in response). There may be several seconds of no temp increase, then shoots up again, down, up again, down, up, up, up, up and HOLDS, down, up, down, down, up, up, UP and even more up! The swings are profound and prolonged.

I concur with Visitor's observation: CPU temps stabilize at idle processing levels - CPU ueage drops from 48%-65% (mean 54%) to 3% - when the GUI is minimized.

Looks like this is no longer an issue in AE v8.1.0

Glad it's fixed in the newest version, I'll close this.
