Full Version: Processor overhead - What is Ad-Aware upto?

When I have the main Ad-Aware window open, task manager shows Ad-Aware.exe using 25% processor power.
I know my Pentium 4 3.06GHz and 2.5GB of RAM are no longer cutting edge, but doesn't this seem a bit excessive?
This overhead is just due to having the main window open, not running a scan or anything, closing the window but leaving the tray icon running instantly knocks 25% off my procesor load - what is Ad-Aware upto?

Thanks in anticipation

OK I've read those links and I think it means the GUI uses 25% of my processing power - surey tht can't be right?!

I have a system similar to yours with the same results. The only time I have the GUI open is when running scans - I just leave the system alone, so I don't worry about it. Although it is a mystery that no other GUIs load up the CPU.

Hello,

I'm not a developer, but doesn't look right to me and I don't remember it doing that before. Let me make some inquiries about this for you.

Thanks for reporting it! smile.gif

Good day,
I reported this very same problem back on February 2ond, I guess it has not been fixed yet, at the time, one of the Mods blamed it on my "low end computer" and my "video card was not good enough", hogwash! I say. Right now I have about 160 applications and games on this computer, and I have tested dozens of programs since then and not one of them has exhibited this peculiar behavior.
Another problem with this program, and I feel that should be addressed immediately, is when Ad-Aware places a file or a program in quarantine it should not automatically delete the file or files at boot-up without any user intervention. In my mind Quarantine should be a safe place to store wayward files and only be deleted at the users choice. Am I wrong?
Catch you latter,
Wink

This is being looked into. We'll let you know what we find out but it definitely should not be using that kind of CPU just being open.

Wink, please don't confuse with other issues. If you have quarantine issues, please put them into a different new topic.

There is definately a problem with your install. I have a 3 GHz Pentium D with 3 GB DDR2 RAM on XP 32-bit SP3 and do not experience any more than 1% CPU with the GUI open. sounds like a conflict with your Firewall or AV software. I would uninstall and reinstall AdAware making sure to disable the firewall during the install and make sure you allow the control AdAware requires (firewall permissives) over all other background services once installed.

It would help if you list your other active security software. I experienced a similar issue using ZoneAlarm several years back (heavy CPU usage at idle for svchost.exe tasks) and switched to Comodo Free Firewall and have had zero issues over the last two years.

Hi maf23 smile.gif

While that is sometimes true, I can verify this issue on a newly set up system running NO other security software and a fresh install of Ad-Aware. Our Q&A team is investigating this report because, while it may not affect all systems, I do believe this is happening on certain machines and Ad-Aware is not designed to use excessive CPU as the original poster here has described (and I can confirm seeing it here).

FYI, I just noticed on my system the 25% CPU usage only occurs when the GUI is maximized onscreen. When I minimize to the task bar, the CPU usage goes back down to 0%. Maybe this is because the skin .eGL files are all ~4mb?

Thats odd. On my version the maximize button is "greyed" out and does not even function. I seem to remember others complaining about not being able to resize the GUI window as well (i.e. cannot drag corner of window or resize category column on scan results)

I don't think visitor means maximised in that sense - rather I think he means that the GUI is open and he can see it rather than it being on the taskbar.

Yeah, what Casey said - I shouldn't have used the word maximized - it happens when GUI is onscreen only.

Update: still not resolved with release of 8.1
