Is there a link I can follow to get to manual downloads of the definitions (and also, where do I drop the definitions into)?
All work arounds suggested have failed.

You can also manually download and update the definitions file.

1. Download from http://download.lavasoft.com/public/core.zip

2. Extract the file (core.aawdef) directly to the Ad-Aware folder, either:

XP:

* C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\Defs (Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition)

Vista:

* C:\Program Data\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\Defs (Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition)

(note: You can also go to, update->settings and click 'import' browse to where you have saved (core.aawdef), select this file then click 'open' and 'ok'.)

3. Close and restart Ad-Aware. (In Anniversary Edition: you exit the program from the System Tray icon.)

I get a page error when I click that link.
Is there a mirror or do I have to do something special to be able to access it?

Nothing special, it's a direct link to the file on the download server, so you should get a download confirmation from your browser (asking if you want to open or save the file). Occassionally my browser won't connect the first time, but will on the second try.

You can click on the green download button on this page, it leads to the same place:

I repeatedly get page error. No matter what time of day or how many times I click the link.
Every other page and link works for me, so I don't understand what is going on. I just want to update my adaware sad.gif

Failed to Connect

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at download.lavasoft.com.

Though the site seems valid, the browser was unable to establish a connection.

* Could the site be temporarily unavailable? Try again later.
* Are you unable to browse other sites? Check the computer's network connection.
* Is your computer or network protected by a firewall or proxy? Incorrect settings can interfere with Web browsing.

Can you visit other security sites such as windows update?

If not, then it sounds as though you have a malware infection.

Indeed. Originally it was not blocking certain updates, but now it seems to have settled in and is blocking all virus/spyware/malware definition updates.
What do I do now? sad.gif

Is it possible for someone to send me a definition file by email/msn or some such or will I have to do a myriad of steps that will inevitably have me calling some overpriced professional to help because I'm ripping my hair out??

No we have a volunteer team here who will help you remove malware. Follow the instructions in the topic in my signature and post a HJT log in the HJT forum for analysis.
